The Temporary Move To A 48 M² Container Should Reduce Expenses During The Renovation Of The Old House, However The Cost Of Electricity Surprised The Family By Increasing Dramatically, Creating An Unexpected Financial Challenge
The move to a 48 m² container seemed like the ideal solution to save money during the renovation of the old house, but the family discovered that electricity costs rose from €250 to €2,100 per year, creating an unexpected financial impact.
Real Estate Crisis And Search For Alternatives
The real estate crisis pressures families across Europe as the price per square meter continues to rise.
Many can no longer afford rent or invest in buying a property, so any alternative that reduces expenses becomes attractive. It was in this scenario that a family from Zemst, Belgium, decided to change their strategy.

They sold their house at the end of 2024 to buy an old property and start a major renovation.
To cut expenses while the work progressed, they chose to live in a 48-square-meter shipping container. The expectation to save seemed clear, but the plan quickly presented a problem.
Container Generates Unexpected Energy Costs
When calculating expenses, the family faced a drastic increase in their electricity bill. According to reports to the Belgian channel HLN, the annual amount jumped from €250 to €2,100.
The internal conditions of the container explain the reason. They use electric heaters in winter and resort to a portable air conditioner in summer because the heat makes the space unbearable.
This constant need for climate control raised costs and derailed the initial savings expectation, although the family remains committed to the original plan.
Project Continues Until 2027
Despite the difficulties, they state that they do not regret the decision. The children view the period as an adventure and participate in the renovation of the new home. The definitive move is expected in 2027, and until then, the family will continue living in the container.
