CROSSER V2 is an Amphibious Vehicle Created by a Portuguese Student to Unite Sustainable Urban Mobility and Underutilized Waterways

A Different Idea, bold and with the potential to change transportation in cities. This describes the project of the amphibious vehicle CROSSER V2, developed by Bernardo Pereira, a student at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.

It is an amphibious vehicle, capable of traveling on both streets and rivers and lakes, offering a new alternative to escape traffic jams and reduce pollution in large cities.

The proposal arises in response to the increasingly frequent problems in urban traffic and the need for sustainable solutions.

Bernardo took the initiative to utilize the waterway network present in many regions to create a vehicle that expands daily commuting possibilities. The goal is for the CROSSER V2 to serve as a bridge between land traffic and water routes.

How CROSSER V2 Works

The vehicle developed by Bernardo Pereira combines the characteristics of a compact vehicle with features that allow its use on bodies of water. The design is intended to perform well both on streets and rivers, paying attention to aerodynamics and hydrodynamics.

Among the planned features are lightweight and corrosion-resistant materials, reinforced sealing, and flotation systems. In addition, the project includes hybrid or electric propulsion, which helps reduce emitted pollutants and noise in urban areas.

Safety is a critical point. The car will have protective devices for water use and stability mechanisms to ensure good performance during trips.

Advantages of the Proposal

Bernardo believes that the CROSSER V2 can help solve several urban problems. One of the advantages would be the reduction of traffic jams by utilizing waterways that are currently underused. This would lessen the flow on the streets and decrease travel time.

Another important contribution would be to the environment. As the vehicle is expected to use an electric or hybrid motor, there would be lower emissions of polluting gases and less noise in traffic, which could improve the quality of life in cities.

The proposal also brings the idea of integrated mobility. In other words, the CROSSER V2 can facilitate connections between different modes of transport, such as subways, buses, and even bicycles. This increases flexibility for daily commuting.

It is also worth highlighting the use of an existing structure: rivers and lakes. In many cities, these waterways are underutilized. The project values this natural resource without the need for major construction.

Challenges and Next Steps

Despite its potential, the CROSSER V2 still faces obstacles. There are legal issues regarding the use of vehicles on water routes, as well as a lack of infrastructure in many cities for boarding and disembarking. Public acceptance will also be an important factor for the success of the project.

Nonetheless, Bernardo Pereira’s initiative draws attention for seeking creative solutions to real problems.

The CROSSER V2 could be the beginning of a new way of thinking about urban mobility. The creation of prototypes and feasibility studies will be the next steps to turn this idea into something concrete.

The amphibious vehicle CROSSER V2 demonstrates that it is possible to go beyond the traditional and invest in innovation to improve cities.
