Strategic Road Connection Advances in Araquari with Bridge of Nearly 500 Meters, Funding Secured, and Promise to Reduce Routes Currently Concentrated on BR-280.
In Araquari, in the North of Santa Catarina, a new road connection of 5.9 kilometers and a bridge of nearly 500 meters over the Parati River are moving toward the hiring phase with an estimated investment of R$ 60 million.
The package is considered a strategic project to alleviate traffic on BR-280, a critical corridor for cargo flow in the South of the country, and the city hall is working with the expectation of launching the bidding process in early 2026, after completing environmental studies, executive project, and defining funding sources.
New Road Connection and Route Reduction
Currently, those leaving Vila Porto Alegre toward downtown Araquari travel approximately 17 kilometers, in a journey that can take up to 40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

With the new bridge over the Parati River and the paving of Porto Alegre Road, the distance between the neighborhood and downtown will be around 700 meters, with a journey estimated at about seven minutes.
This reduction in time and distance supports the forecast of an annual savings of around R$ 32 million in logistics, considering shorter routes for residents, businesses, and trucks that cross the municipality daily.
Parallel Route to Alleviate BR-280

The project takes advantage of existing sections of the old Porto Alegre Road and the Rio do Morro Highway, which connects south Joinville to BR-280 in Araquari.
From these points, a new route will be opened to complete the 5.9 kilometers of extension and create a direct access between Vila Porto Alegre and downtown, reducing the need to use the most congested section of BR-280.
In practice, this connection will function as a parallel route to the federal highway for trips between Joinville, Araquari, São Francisco do Sul, and Balneário Barra do Sul, which are currently concentrated on a few access points.
The intention is to divert part of the local and short-distance traffic from BR-280, where there are ongoing duplication works, heavy truck traffic, and historical bottlenecks in different sections.
489-Meter Bridge over the Parati River
The central point of the project is the bridge that will cross the Parati River.
The executive project envisions a structure of 488.85 meters in length, made of reinforced concrete, with two traffic lanes, bike lane, and sidewalk for pedestrians.
The crossing will be supported by deep foundations to span the estuary and mangrove area.

When completed, the bridge is expected to be among the largest in Santa Catarina in continuous length and is likely to become a new landscape point of reference in Araquari.
Total Investment and Cost Distribution
The complete package – bridge, paving of Porto Alegre Road, and other road adjustments – remains estimated at R$ 60 million in the latest projections released by the municipality.
Within this amount, initial studies indicate around R$ 44 million specifically allocated for the bridge.
These numbers may be adjusted during the bidding phase due to updates in the prices of materials and heavy engineering services.
The final cost will only be determined after the competition among interested companies and the signing of the construction contract.
Funding Sources and Public Transfers
In 2025, the funding plan advanced.
The Government of Santa Catarina confirmed R$ 25 million through a state investment program for infrastructure, while parliamentary amendments total about R$ 5 million, forming R$ 30 million already earmarked for the new connection.
At the same time, the city hall structured a request for a credit operation of up to R$ 48 million, under analysis by financial institutions, for a package of works that includes the nearly 500-meter bridge.
Part of this amount is expected to be specifically allocated for the crossing over the Parati River.
The municipality also presented the project to the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Cities, seeking support to secure federal funds during the construction phase.

Completed Stages and What’s Needed for Bidding
The executive project for the bridge and road connection is in the final adjustment phase.
The forest inventory and stages of the declaration of public utility at the bridge ends have already been completed.
The environmental licensing is still under review.
The announced goal is to launch the bidding process in early 2026, with a forecast for the public announcement in January, integrating the finalization of the project and construction in the same contract.
There is not yet an official schedule for the start of the works, which will depend on the competition, the release of funds, and environmental licenses.
Connection with the Duplication of BR-280
While Araquari organizes the new route over the Parati River, the surrounding roadways are also undergoing changes.
The DNIT has resumed work on the duplication of BR-280 and issued a public announcement for the section between São Francisco do Sul and Araquari, which includes a 38-kilometer bike lane connecting the municipalities.
The combination of duplication, bike lane, and bridge indicates a broader reconfiguration of the road network in North Santa Catarina.
Urban Mobility, Logistics, and Economic Impact

From a mobility perspective, the new connection is seen as a key piece to improve access to downtown Araquari and reduce the daily commute time for workers.
The reduction of the route from Vila Porto Alegre from 17 kilometers to 700 meters is the most emblematic data of this change.
From an economic standpoint, projections suggest annual savings of around R$ 32 million in logistics costs.
The crossing should also stimulate a new axis of urban development and enhance areas near the estuary.
The combination of the bridge, natural landscape, and mobility further raises expectations for tourism impact.
“Shortening distances and bringing lives closer,” said Mayor Gordo Jasper (PSD), summarizing the project’s goal.
Execution Challenges and Questions About Timelines
Despite recent advances, the history of major road projects in the region keeps the discussion about deadlines alive.
The duplication of BR-280 has accumulated years of delays and adjustments, leading part of the population to cautiously observe the progress of the bridge over the Parati River.
With bidding expected in 2026 and part of the funds secured, the discussion now revolves around trust in the timeline: will this nearly 500-meter structure truly transform travel in North Santa Catarina, or does it still raise uncertainties among residents?
