Funding Search for the South Brazilian Gas Transporter (TBS) Pipeline Was the Goal of the Governor’s Trip to Montevideo

The governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, is seeking funding for the construction of a pipeline between Uruguaiana and Porto Alegre and met with François Borit, the representative in charge of CAF (Latin American Development Bank) in Montevideo. The amount requested by the governor is US$ 600 million. Natural Gas continues to attract attention, and the ANP has authorized two more companies to work in the sector.

The project involves a pipeline between Uruguaiana and Porto Alegre, a project by the South Brazilian Gas Transporter (TBS), which will have 565 km, closing the ring in the Southern Cone and enabling the supply of markets with Argentine and Brazilian natural gas.

According to the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, with the construction of the pipeline, it will be possible to bring natural gas produced in the Vaca Muerta region of Argentina to Brazil.

“We discussed the possibility of this agency being a financing bank for important projects, especially related to the pipeline. As the federal government has an aggressive policy to reduce gas costs in Brazil, bringing gas from the so-called Vaca Muerta Basin in Argentina to Brazil could be an interesting prospect, and that is why we are seeking pathways for this,” said the governor.

TBS’s partners include Petrobras, Ipiranga, Repsol, and Total, and the complete project of the pipeline in Rio Grande do Sul includes phase 1, which has already been implemented with two sections of 25 km (at the ends) built.
At the western end, the connection is with the pipeline of Gas del Mercosur S.A. (TGM) and at its eastern end, with the pipeline of the Brazilian Bolivian Gas Pipeline, Gasbol. The total project length is 615 km.

Today, the TBS has a contract with Sulgás, which distributes natural gas from Rio Grande do Sul, on the Uruguaiana side, to supply the Uruguaiana Thermoelectric Plant and, on the Canoas side, for the transport of Bolivian gas destined for the Southern Petrochemical Hub.
