Joseph Harris-Birtill joined Mensa before the age of 3
Joseph Harris-Birtill’s entry into Mensa was formalized when he was 2 years and 182 days old. To qualify for the club, one must be among the top 2% of the most intelligent, which corresponds to an IQ of at least 132.
The achievement made Joseph the youngest male member in Mensa’s history. He also was younger than the age recorded by Isla McNabb from the United States, noted as the youngest female member of the organization, admitted at 2 years and 195 days.

Joseph is the son of Drs. Rose and David Harris-Birtill, both 39 years old and connected to the academic field. David is a full professor at the University of St Andrews.
Rose is an honorary full professor at the same institution and editorial director of the Open Library of Humanities.

Early signs appeared in the boy’s first months of life
According to Rose Harris-Birtill, signs of early development appeared very early. She reported that Joseph rolled over for the first time at five weeks old and said his first word at seven months.
The mother also stated that the boy read his first book aloud, from beginning to end, when he was about one and three-quarters years old. At 2 years and 3 months, he was already reading fluently for 10 minutes straight.
At this same stage, Joseph could count to 10 in five languages and also count forwards and backwards well over 100.
According to Rose, he is still learning Morse code, knows the Greek alphabet, and has recently shown interest in the periodic table.
Parents sought support for a child with high abilities
Rose and David decided to contact Mensa after realizing that Joseph’s early literacy indicated an unusual advancement for his age. The family was seeking more support and resources aimed at children with high abilities.
Rose said she found information about the association and the resources offered by Mensa for this audience.
For the parents, the achievement is an unusual distinction and something Joseph will be able to look at with pride when he is older.
Despite the recognition, the parents state that Joseph still does not seem to realize that he has abilities above those of other children his age. They describe him as kind, caring, confident, curious, and determined.
Reading, music, languages, and challenges are part of the child’s routine
Besides reading, Joseph also shows interest in music. He enjoys both listening and playing, and is currently learning piano.
The boy also likes learning languages, solving math problems, cooking, making paper airplanes, and playing.
Rose stated that Joseph gets excited about complexity, whether learning chess or dealing with new words and concepts. For her, her son’s story also helps draw attention to high-performing children.
The mother highlighted that there is a common misconception that everything is easy for children with high abilities. According to her, these students also need appropriate stimulation and understanding, as their talents can be overshadowed by the pressure to fit into environments not designed for them.
