Significant Increase in Storage and Production Capacity
SLB, a renowned global technology company, celebrated the inauguration of the expansion of its Drilling Fluids operational base at the Port of Açu, located in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro. This advancement raised the company’s storage capacity from 18,000 to 42,500 barrels, representing an investment of over 20 million reais. With this increase, SLB is now better equipped to serve a wider variety of clients.
This development not only expands the storage capacity for liquid fluids but also includes a significant expansion of the dry bulk operational base, which stores solid materials such as barite, bentonite, and calcium carbonate. The storage capacity for these materials has increased to approximately 13,900 ft³, equivalent to around 700 tons of barite, an essential component for drilling fluids.
Benefits of the Expansion for the Region and the Sector
According to Luciano Mello Genuncio, Drilling Fluids Manager at SLB, the completion of this expansion, which started last year and was finalized in November 2023, positions SLB as the regional leader in terms of drilling fluids operational base. This improvement enables SLB to provide essential services for well operations to various clients, especially those operating in the pre-salt and post-salt areas of North Fluminense.

Seismic surveys conducted by Russian ships in Antarctica have indicated estimates of up to 511 billion barrels of oil in the Weddell Sea, almost double the reserves of Saudi Arabia, in a scenario that raises alarms in the United Kingdom about the risk to the treaty that has prohibited mining on the continent since 1959.

While Brazil sits on the pre-salt and still imports diesel, Turkey, which produces almost no oil, crossed half the world to drill 7,500 meters below the sea in Somalia in search of its own fuel.

Why didn’t oil reach $150 even after three months of the Strait of Hormuz being closed?
This expansion is not only a milestone for SLB but also for the drilling industry in the region. With the production, storage, and pumping of fluids directly from the base to clients’ vessels in the offshore segment, SLB ensures an efficient and continuous supply of essential resources for drilling operations in the region and its surroundings.
SLB and Its Role in the Drilling Market
The increase in SLB’s operational capacity at the Port of Açu is a clear indication of its commitment to meeting the growing demand for high-quality drilling services. With modernized facilities and expanded capacity, SLB is ready to tackle the challenges of the sector and support the development of the oil and gas industry in the region.
SLB positions itself, therefore, not only as a leader in providing drilling fluids but also as a key influencer in the evolution and sustainability of the offshore sector in the North Fluminense region. This development promises to benefit not only SLB and its clients but also the local community and the energy sector as a whole, driving efficiency and innovation in offshore drilling.
