Naturgy Expands Its Influence With A Network That Now Exceeds 8,300 Km
Naturgy, a giant in natural gas supply, has extended its distribution network to an impressive 8,300 kilometers, marking a strong presence in Southeast Brazil. This advancement positions the company as a key supplier in 61 municipalities, covering a customer base of over 1.1 million. The focus of this expansion has been the capital, the interior, and the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, as well as southern São Paulo, establishing Naturgy as a leader in natural gas supply in the area.
The majority of this extensive network, around 5,122 kilometers, serves the capital and the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, benefiting over 998 thousand customers in 19 municipalities. The network also extends into the interior of the state, covering 1,334 kilometers and serving more than 89 thousand customers in 24 municipalities across regions such as the North and Northwest Fluminense, Baixada Litorânea, Serrana Region, Médio Paraíba, and Central South of the State.
Significant Contributions of Naturgy to Regional Development
Over the past two and a half decades, Naturgy has been a driving force in the development of natural gas infrastructure in Brazil, with a cumulative investment exceeding R$ 10 billion just in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This investment has resulted in the creation of 14,000 direct and indirect jobs, with estimates suggesting that over 40,000 jobs have been created due to the company’s investments since 1997. Naturgy has not only modernized existing infrastructure but has also significantly expanded its distribution network to over 6,000 kilometers in the State of Rio de Janeiro, doubling its customer base. This effort has made Rio de Janeiro the state with the highest level of gasification in Brazil, where 25% of households have access to natural gas, compared to a national average of only 3%.

Naturgy’s Leadership in Natural Gas and CNG Markets
Naturgy stands out not only for the extent of its network but also for the diversity of markets it serves, including households, businesses, industries, thermal generation, and natural gas vehicle (CNG) stations. It is the largest gas distributor in the country by sales volume to the thermoelectric market and a leader in the CNG market. The company operates its distribution and commercialization activities in Brazil, acquiring natural gas from Petrobras and distributing it through its vast network to provide its customers with an essential resource. In Rio de Janeiro, Naturgy is regulated by the Energy and Basic Sanitation Regulatory Agency of the State (Agenersa), while in São Paulo, oversight is the responsibility of the Regulatory Agency for Sanitation and Energy of the State (Arsesp).
This substantial growth in Naturgy’s natural gas distribution infrastructure not only strengthens its position as a leader in the sector but also underscores its commitment to sustainable development and innovation in the Southeast region.
