Specifically, the ship’s cargo tank exploded while the 3,300 dwt oil tanker was anchored in the bay, waiting for approval to dock. The Zaliv America was in ballast at the time, not carrying any cargo, confirmed the company Nayada, the operator of the vessel, in an official statement.
No fire or oil spill was detected, the company added, and the remaining nine of twelve crew members aboard the Zaliv America were not injured, the cargo ship company reported.
An investigation into the causes of the incident has been initiated, but according to experts, gases from the empty cargo tanks are among the possible causes.
The 3,550 dwt oil tanker (Gross tonnage) was built in Denmark in 1989 and remains docked at the pier in the port of Nakhodka.
