A few meters from the waterfalls, the man hung on the Devil’s Throat walkway and descended to retrieve the device, in front of other visitors. He managed to return uninjured, but the action is prohibited and could have ended in tragedy. The administration reinforces: lost objects must be retrieved by firefighters.

A moment of recklessness at Iguazu Falls caught the attention of those visiting the park. A Brazilian tourist risked his own life by jumping over the protective railing and descending to the waters of Iguazu Falls to retrieve a cell phone he had dropped, in a scene captured by other visitors on the morning of this Saturday, on the Brazilian side of the park, in Foz do Iguaçu, in western Paraná.

The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, June 6, 2026, on the walkway that gives access to the Devil’s Throat, one of the most visited points of the Iguaçu National Park. According to information gathered on site, the man had dropped his cell phone into the Iguaçu River and, in an attempt to retrieve it, crossed the safety barrier and descended to where the device was. The action was witnessed by several people and recorded in images that circulated on social media. Below, we explain what is known about the case and why this type of action is so dangerous.

What happened at Iguazu Falls

A Brazilian tourist jumped over the railing at Iguazu Falls to fetch a cell phone on the morning of this Saturday; see what happened and why the action is prohibited.
The scene, recorded by others, shows each step of the risk.

In the images, it is possible to see the moment when the Brazilian tourist hangs on the walkway, jumps and gets close to the waterfalls, and, after retrieving the cell phone, climbs back onto the structure to return to the safe area, all just a few meters from one of the most imposing waterfalls in the world.

Despite the enormous risk involved, the tourist managed to return to the walkway uninjured and with the device in hand.

The administration of the Iguaçu National Park did not disclose the identity of the visitor, informing only that he is Brazilian.

The episode reignites the debate about the recklessness of some tourists, who put their own lives in danger for material objects at imposing natural tourist spots like the Falls.

How the firefighters acted

The park’s security team acted as soon as they learned of the incident.

The situation was handled by the unit’s civilian firefighters, who constantly monitor the trails and the walkway to the Devil’s Throat, and upon learning of the case, made an immediate intervention and advised the visitor on safety procedures, according to the park administration.

According to Urbia Cataratas, the concessionaire responsible for the administration of Iguaçu National Park, the professionals accompanied the tourist until the end of the visit, when he was removed from the park.

The concessionaire highlighted that the security work is carried out in an integrated manner between firefighters, security teams, and, when necessary, with the support of the Military Police, precisely to preserve the physical integrity of visitors.

Why the behavior is prohibited and dangerous

What may seem like just a prank to some is actually a serious infraction and a risk of death.

In a statement, Iguaçu National Park reinforced that it is expressly forbidden to cross, climb, or sit on guardrails, whether to take photos or to retrieve objects, precisely because the area of the falls poses a real risk of fatal falls and drowning, given the strength of the current and the height of the location.

The fences and protective barriers exist precisely to prevent accidents in this type of environment.

Crossing them, even for a few moments, can result in slips on wet surfaces, loss of balance, and falls from great heights.

Therefore, emergency teams operate permanently in the unit, and visitors receive safety instructions both from the teams and from the signage installed along the entire route.

What to do if you drop an objectThe administration itself advises: in case of loss of belongings that fall into the river or on the slopes, the visitor should contact the park’s firefighting team, who will assess the possibility of safe retrieval, either immediately or at a later time, depending on the conditions.

Under no circumstances should the protective fences be crossed.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident at the Falls.

Other cases of recklessness have already been recorded at the same tourist destination, such as a tourist who jumped over the protective barriers to retrieve a hat at the Devil’s Throat, on the Argentine side of the Iguazu Falls, and a man who risked a baby’s life to take a photo at the site, episodes that also resonated and raised alerts.

These cases reinforce the importance of awareness campaigns and monitoring in the parks.

The Iguazu Falls, which attract millions of visitors each year and are one of the most famous natural landscapes on the planet, require respect for safety rules.

No object, no matter how valuable, justifies risking your own life or that of others in the face of the power of the waters.

The case of the Brazilian tourist who jumped the fence at the Iguazu Falls to retrieve a cell phone ended well, with no injuries, but serves as a serious warning about the dangers of recklessness at imposing natural tourist spots.

The message from the authorities is clear: protective barriers exist to save lives, and any lost object can and should be retrieved by specialized teams, never by the visitor themselves.

In the face of the grandeur and power of the Falls, common sense and respect for the rules are the best ways to ensure a safe visit.

And you, what did you think of this Brazilian tourist’s attitude at the Iguazu Falls? Have you ever witnessed any reckless behavior at tourist spots?
