Free UFSJ course trains teachers from Minas Gerais for ethnic-racial education. Registration extended until January 2025!

UFSJ has extended registration for its free and 100% online course of ethnic-racial education. Starting in March 2025, the training offers practical tools for teachers and managers of the public school system in Minas Gerais. Secure your spot and receive certification!

Education in Minas Gerais is about to undergo an unprecedented transformation.

Amid discussions about inclusion and diversity, an initiative emerges that promises to directly impact teachers and managers in the public network.

An innovative, free and fully online course is being offered by the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ), addressing a crucial topic: ethnic-racial education.

With registration extended until January 12, 2025, the course aims to provide practical and theoretical tools so that educators can implement a more inclusive and representative pedagogy.

Ethnic-racial education: an essential theme

According to experts, training in ethnic-racial education has become essential to ensure a more inclusive and fair school.

Cultural diversity and racial representation in pedagogical practices are crucial elements to combat inequalities and promote an equitable educational environment.

As announced by UFSJ, the course's main focus is to train teachers and managers to comply with Article 26A of the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (LDB).

This legislation requires Brazilian schools to teach African, Afro-Brazilian and indigenous histories and cultures, ensuring that the curriculum reflects the plurality of Brazilian society.

Course details

With a workload of 120 hours, the course will be held exclusively online through the Virtual Learning Environment (AVA).

This modern platform allows participants to combine flexibility with high-quality teaching, using a methodology that includes live classes, interactive materials and case studies.

The objectives of the training go beyond basic teaching on ethnic-racial relations:

  • Promote racial literacy among educators;
  • Incorporate pedagogical practices based on black and quilombola traditions and cultures;
  • Strengthen the continuing education of education professionals;
  • Develop strategies for an education that respects and values diversity.

Furthermore, the course is open exclusively to teachers and educational managers from the public network of Minas Gerais, both at municipal and state level.

With 3.750 vacancies available, the initiative hopes to reach a significant number of professionals and impact thousands of students.

Certification and requirements

According to UFSJ, the course is completely free and offers extension certification to participants who achieve a minimum score of 60%.

This certification, issued by one of the most respected federal universities in the country, represents an important qualification in the curriculum of teachers and managers.

Interested parties only need to register on the university's official website. Places will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and classes are scheduled to begin in March 2025.

Impact on public education

As UFSJ highlighted, initiatives like this are fundamental to transforming public education in Minas Gerais.

By equipping educators with knowledge about ethnic-racial relations, the course contributes to creating a more welcoming and egalitarian school environment.

Furthermore, the training encourages participants to adapt their pedagogical practices to the sociocultural reality of their students, valuing the stories and experiences of black and quilombola communities.

This approach strengthens students’ identity and combats structural racism present in society.

How to participate

To guarantee your registration, simply access the UFSJ website and fill out the form by January 12, 2025. Notices with more details about the course can be found at the following links:

The free course offered by UFSJ represents a unique opportunity for teachers and managers who wish to transform their pedagogical practice and contribute to a more inclusive society.

But could this initiative inspire other universities to adopt similar projects and expand the reach of ethnic-racial education in Brazil?
