Tesla Announced a Recall of More Than 125,000 Vehicles in the United States. The Reason: A Problem Found in Software That Prevents Activation of the Seatbelt Warning System, Which Increases the Risk of Injury in Case of an Accident.

The information was revealed by federal regulators in the United States on Friday (14). According to information revealed by the portal “UOL”, the company’s action, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, involves the following models:

  • Tesla Model S, manufactured between 2012 and 2024;
  • Model Y, produced between 2020 and 2023;
  • Model X from 2015 to 2024;
  • Model 3 from 2017 to 2023.

According to the cited portal, the information is in a document from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and, although Tesla has no records of collisions, fatalities, or injuries resulting from this issue, the company identified 104 possible warranty claims related to the defect.

To resolve the issue, Tesla will provide a free over-the-air software update for the affected vehicles, eliminating the reliance on the seat occupancy sensor.

More Than Two Million Cars Recalled

Tesla has already recalled about 2.5 million vehicles in six recalls conducted this year, according to the NHTSA. This number places Tesla as the second automaker with the most cars recalled in the U.S. in 2024, behind only Ford, which issued 26 recalls covering more than 3 million vehicles.

Elon Musk’s Company May Face Multi-Million Dollar Fine

The NHTSA requested additional information from Tesla drivers to analyze the Autopilot software, due to “multiple concerns” that the recall issued by the company in December did not resolve the issues with the system.

Regulators identified 20 additional accidents after the update. If Tesla does not cooperate with the agency’s investigation into Autopilot, the company could face a daily fine of up to US$ 27,168 per violation, totaling up to US$ 135 million.
