Porto Alegre creates monthly aid of up to R$1.000 for families who left their homes due to construction work on the Guaíba bridge
The City of Porto Alegre approved financial aid for affected families for the works on the Guaíba bridge. Law No. 14.224, which creates the Ponte Stay benefit, was signed by Mayor Sebastião Melo on Monday, the 5th, and published in the Official Gazette of Porto Alegre this Tuesday, the 6th.
The proposal came from the Executive and was approved by the City Council on April 7. The objective of the benefit is to financially support residents who had to leave their homes due to interventions in the region.
According to the city hall, the measure guarantees up to R$1.000 per month per registered family, for a period of up to 24 months.

The transfer of the aid is conditional upon the full sending of the resources by the government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Only with this transfer will the municipality be able to make payments to families. If the State is interested, the period of granting the benefit may be extended.
The legislation also establishes that the program will be terminated as soon as a permanent housing solution is offered to the beneficiaries. The intention is to guarantee minimum conditions for temporary stay until the residents have access to new suitable housing.
The Ponte Stay benefit becomes an official instrument to deal with the social impacts of large-scale public works. As of the publication of the law, the benefit will come into effect and will depend on the next steps of the state government for it to begin being paid.
