Porto Alegre Creates Monthly Assistance of Up to R$ 1,000 for Families Who Left Their Homes Due to Works on the Guaíba Bridge Access
The City Hall of Porto Alegre has sanctioned financial assistance for affected families due to the works on the access to the Guaíba Bridge. Law No. 14,224, which creates the Estadia-Ponte benefit, was signed by Mayor Sebastião Melo on Monday, the 5th, and published in the Official Gazette of Porto Alegre on Tuesday, the 6th.
The proposal came from the Executive and was approved by the City Council on April 7. The purpose of the benefit is to financially support residents who had to leave their homes due to interventions in the area.
According to the city hall, the measure guarantees up to R$ 1,000 per registered family per month for a period of up to 24 months.

The transfer of the assistance is conditioned on the full transfer of resources by the government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Only with this transfer can the municipality start making payments to the families. Should the state express interest, the duration of the benefit can be extended.
The legislation also establishes that the program will be terminated once a definitive housing solution is offered to the beneficiaries. The intention is to ensure minimum temporary housing conditions until the residents have access to new adequate housing.
The Estadia-Ponte assistance becomes an official tool to address the social impacts of large-scale public works. As of the publication of the law, the benefit comes into effect and will depend on the next steps of the state government for payments to begin.
