Flamengo Adopts BYD Electric Bus and Leads Sustainable Innovation in Brazilian Sports. Sustainable Initiative Includes Charging at Maracanãzinho and Support for Various Sports.
Flamengo has become the first sports club in Brazil to incorporate a 100% electric bus from the Chinese manufacturer BYD into its operations. The official delivery of the BYD D9F model took place at the rowing clubhouse in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro, marking the beginning of a new phase in the transportation of the red-and-black athletes.
The initiative includes not only men’s and women’s soccer but also Olympic sports such as swimming, judo, basketball, and artistic gymnastics.
The adoption of the electric bus by Flamengo aims to provide greater comfort, safety, and efficiency to its 1,100 athletes, without compromising environmental responsibility.

According to BYD, the vehicle can avoid the emission of up to 182 tons of CO² per year, in addition to reducing operational costs and travel time.
BYD Technology Serving Sports and the Environment
The BYD D9F electric model has a body length of up to 13 meters and a range of 250 km per charge.
The silent operation and front and rear air suspension ensure a comfortable journey for passengers and the driver.
The motors integrated into the rear wheels feature electronic traction control, providing power and stability.
The disc brake system with ABS and energy regeneration contributes to safety and increases range.
Moreover, the low maintenance cost and reduced charging time make the bus a practical solution for the club’s daily activities.
A charging station will be installed at Maracanãzinho, facilitating logistical operations during training and competitions.
Flamengo and BYD: Partnership That Inspires National Sports
“By bringing cutting-edge BYD technology into the daily lives of high-performance athletes, we show that it is possible to offer comfort, safety, and efficiency without compromising our commitment to the environment. We hope that this initiative inspires other institutions, thus paving the way for a cleaner future,” said Marcello Schneider, Director of Commercial Vehicles and Solar Division at BYD Brazil.

The partnership between Flamengo and BYD reinforces the club’s role as an agent of transformation in Brazilian sports. Marcus Vinicius, Director of Olympic Sports at Flamengo, emphasized:
“Our athletes deserve this type of service, which, together with a manufacturer concerned with clean energy, helps reduce travel times, resources, and also pollution in Rio and Brazil.”
BYD Expands Its Presence in International Sports

The action with Flamengo is not isolated. BYD has also partnered with Inter Milan, becoming the club’s “Global Automotive Partner.”
The agreement includes the delivery of 70 vehicles for management and players, in addition to supporting the debut of the premium brand DENZA in Europe.
The Chinese automaker is also an official sponsor of UEFA EURO 2024 and the UEFA Under-21 European Championship 2025.
These initiatives are part of BYD’s plan to establish itself as a reference in sustainable mobility in high-performance sports.
