Clean energy production through distributed generation is gaining ground in Brazil. The southern region, for example, is one of the areas that has been evolving the most in this type of generation. Data from the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) reveals that more than 4GW of energy is produced by the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, the latter being the leader in the region with over 2 GW produced.

It is amid all this growth potential that the 18th edition of the Regional Forum on Distributed Generation in the southern region (Fórum GD Sul) will take place in April. The event is confirmed for the 26th and 27th of the month, and it will be held for the first time in a shopping mall, with the event space at Barra Shopping Sul in Porto Alegre being the chosen venue.

It is worth noting that according to the Brazilian Association of Distributed Generation (ABGD), which promotes the Forum, the state of Rio Grande do Sul is currently the third to exceed the mark of 2 GW of capacity in its own electricity generation. Furthermore, the southern state also stands out for the number of consumer units benefiting from this type of generation. Currently, RS has over 233 thousand consumer units, surpassing even the leading state in the segment, which is Minas Gerais.

Guilherme Chrispim, president of ABGD, emphasizes that this energy modality is among the fastest-growing in Brazil and new milestones are being achieved, as seen in Rio Grande do Sul.

“Distributed generation has established itself over the past few years, especially in 2022, as the fastest-growing energy modality in Brazil. It is important to start the year by reaching new milestones and increasing the capacity in distributed generation and the number of consumer units, as in Rio Grande do Sul. The state has been growing considerably and, without a doubt, will evolve even further in 2023,” the specialist assesses.

He also notes that in just over a year, the region doubled its capacity for its own energy generation, moving from 1 GW in December 2021 to 2 GW in February 2023.

“In the coming years, increasing the diversification of the sources used in distributed generation will be one of the sector’s challenges. We need to better harness the possibilities in biomass and urban solid waste,” Chrispim explains.

Tiago Fraga, CEO of Grupo FRG Mídias & Eventos, the organizing company of Fórum GD – Southern Region, also comments on the subject. He explains that the Fórum GD Southern Region returns to the city where the first forum was created, with Rio Grande do Sul now being one of the sector’s biggest highlights.

“The eighteenth edition of Fórum GD returns to its roots. The first edition of the forum in 2018 was held in Porto Alegre. The first regional event to discuss localized topics, demands, and opportunities was held in Rio Grande do Sul. So, even after all these years, Rio Grande do Sul is one of the major highlights, ranking third or fourth. Among the top five states in terms of connections or installed potential, Rio Grande do Sul has throughout these years, having hosted the first edition of the Forum, become one of the protagonists of Distributed Generation in the country,” Fraga reinforces.

The specialist also concludes by reiterating that the Fórum GD aims to further accentuate the growth curve of the sector in the region. More information about the event, as well as registrations and programming, can be accessed directly on the official website www.forumgdsul.com.br
