The Perseu Abramo Foundation, a center for political training and knowledge linked to the Workers’ Party (PT), is open for enrollment for a free online course on the history of Brazil.
Entitled “Revisiting The History Of Brazil: Debates And Conflicts”, the course offers a profound and critical approach to the main events that marked the country over more than 500 years of history.
Maga Lecture With Lilia Schwarcz
The inaugural class of the course, scheduled for May 8, 2025, will be taught by the renowned anthropologist and historian Lilia Schwarcz, professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL).

The lecture, entitled “Brazil: A Biography”, will be streamed live on the official YouTube channel of the Perseu Abramo Foundation, and promises to be an enlightening introduction to the themes that will be addressed throughout the course.
Curation And Structure Of The Course
With curation by Dulce Pandolfi, professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the course is divided into three modules that cover different periods of Brazilian history, from the colonial period to contemporary debates about democracy and authoritarianism.
The course will consist of 14 recorded classes, taught by renowned professors and researchers from universities such as UFRJ, UFF, UFMG, UFJF and UFSC, among others.
The classes will be made available every Thursday, starting at 6 PM, with a total duration until August 7, 2025.
Main Themes Addressed
The content of the course covers a wide range of topics, from the formation of the Brazilian nation in the colonial period to the contemporary challenges faced by the country.
Among the topics discussed are: the slave system, the struggle of indigenous peoples, the revolts in the colonial period, coronelismo, the 1930 Revolution, the Vargas Era, rural and urban conflicts, the 1964 coup, the military dictatorship, democratic transition, neoliberalism, and the crisis of the left, in addition to more recent issues such as Bolsonarism and Lulism.
Critical Reflection On Brazilian History
According to Jorge Bittar, director of Training at the Perseu Abramo Foundation, the aim of the course is to provide a deep reflection on more than 500 years of Brazilian history, with an emphasis on the events, struggles, and challenges that shaped Brazilian society.
Bittar emphasizes that the course seeks to question the traditional views about the country, challenging the notion that Brazil has always been a peaceful and egalitarian nation.
“We will discuss the formation of our nation in the colonial period and contemporary debates about democracy, authoritarianism, and inequality. The aim is to offer a critical reflection on the factors that influenced and still influence our society”, states the foundation’s director.
