Young People Are Leaving The IT Sector Despite The High Salaries Offered. Although The Technology Field Is Becoming Increasingly Promising, It Has Not Been Able To Attract Generation Z. Understand The Reasons Behind This Trend.

The salaries in the Information Technology (IT) field, which were already attractive, continue to rise, reflecting the high demand for qualified professionals. However, the Generation Z, made up of young people born between 1997 and 2012, is showing a significant shift in attitude. Instead of seeking opportunities in IT, many are choosing other sectors, such as healthcare. Check out the reasons behind this surprising trend and what it means for the future of the job market. If you are following the changes in young people’s career preferences, keep reading to understand what is behind this exodus from the IT sector.

Young People Leave The IT Sector: Google And Amazon Face A Drop In Ranking

The situation was pointed out by a study from the National Society of High School Scholars, which surveyed over 10,000 young people. Major tech companies like Google and Amazon have dropped in the ranking of student preference. Google, which was once at the top, is now seventh, and Amazon is eighth.

The study conducted in the U.S. indicated that the main areas of professional interest include medicine and healthcare. The primary interest of young people from Generation Z is working in large companies in the healthcare sector.

Experts explain that the study indicates a trend for Brazil. According to communication master’s and doctorate holder, Dado Schneider, a speaker and researcher on Generation Z, the pandemic was a significant reason why young people are leaving the IT sector.

Dado Schneider emphasizes that: “when this generation began to work, a global lockdown emerged, and many started having classes confined, and did not have that classic academic life. They began online internships, and did not have an initiation in the way it used to be in the past. They were born into a technological context, which does not make them as enchanted by technology as previous generations“, pointed out the expert.

Young People Of Generation Z Have A More Negative View Of Artificial Intelligence

The counselor of the Brazilian Association of Human Resources, Cosme Peres, explained that the study also pointed out that Generation Z has a more negative view of artificial intelligence. The IT director of Gi Group Holding, José Roberto Paim Neto, recalls that historically, in Brazil, the healthcare sector is more sought after, and the demand for IT courses continues to increase.

In Brazil, young people are leaving the IT sector, and 43.7% of companies struggle “a little” or “to a great extent” to find professionals with advanced digital skills. The data comes from a survey by Gi Group Holding, in partnership with the Italian technological university Politécnico di Milano, and the data intelligence company Intelig Data Management.

The expectation is that companies will increasingly seek specialists in Digital Marketing and Strategy (40%), Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Specialists (35%), Information Security Analysts (35%), among others, in the coming years.

Young People Are Leaving The IT Sector And Salaries Are 82% Higher

With Generation Z turning away from technology, there are more job openings than qualified professionals to fill them. As a result, companies are offering salaries up to 82% higher than those in medium and low-tech companies. The data was released by the National Confederation of Commerce (CNI).

Those working in medium-low technology companies, according to the federation’s survey, have an average salary of R$ 3,238.14. In high-tech companies, the amount rises to R$ 5,901.31.

The president of the Labor Relations Council of the Federation of Industries of the State (Consurt), Fernando Otávio Campos, explains that technology professionals are those who develop, operate, and manage high-tech equipment, which are more sophisticated including advanced automation, artificial intelligence, for example.
