GM Launched Electric Car That Promises to Compete Directly With the BYD Dolphin. The Vehicle Delivers 134 Horsepower and Hits the Market for R$ 65 Thousand in Direct Conversion.

The joint venture of General Motors (GM) with Saic and Wuling – SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) has launched a new electric car for the Baojun brand in China, named Cloud, a compact hatchback that promises to rival the BYD Dolphin.

Called Yen Duo in Chinese, the new model is similar in size to the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, measuring 4.29 meters long, 1.85 meters wide, and 1.65 meters high, while the wheelbase is 2.70 meters.

Its dimensions make it the largest electric car from Baojun after the microcar KiWi and the micro SUV Yep, as well as the first 5-door BEV. The dedicated EV platform and minivan shape make the BYD Dolphin rival very spacious for its size.

The model can accommodate 5 passengers and offers up to 1,707 liters of storage space with the rear seats folded down. With 5 passengers on board, the cargo volume is 382 liters or 606 liters if the trunk floor is removed.

The Baojun Cloud comes factory-equipped with a front electric motor generating 100 kilowatts, equivalent to 134 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque. The manufacturer offers two battery options with capacities of 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh. The estimated ranges in the China CLTC cycle are 360 km and 460 km, respectively.

Baojun claims that the Cloud was developed to meet the demands of customers who prefer urban commuting, as well as those who enjoy long-distance trips. Charging the battery from 30% to 80% takes only 40 minutes using DC fast charging.

Regarding its design, the Baojun Cloud uses a minivan shape with highlights including split headlights, diamond-shaped taillights connected by a light bar, a panoramic roof covering more than 2 square meters, and 18-inch wheels.

The exterior is available in three colors reminiscent of clouds. Inside, the BYD Dolphin rival features a two-tone interior with sofa-like seats that are hand-stitched using a lightweight and breathable fabric. The rear seat has three places and can be adjusted up to 135 degrees for a more comfortable passenger experience.

The dashboard is dominated by a 15.6-inch smart console screen and an 8.8-inch instrument panel, both equipped with the new Ling OS 2.0 operating system with voice integration. Other highlights include wireless phone charging, a 360-degree panoramic camera system, and ambient lighting with 265 colors.

For greater comfort, GM’s electric car features an electric tailgate, Auto Hold, and rain-sensing wipers. There are four model variants available, with prices ranging from R$ 65 thousand to R$ 83 thousand. As a big success, the BYD Dolphin rival already has 10,000 pre-orders, according to CarNewsChina.

JAC Motors Also Wants to Enter the Race

In addition to this electric car from GM that promises to be the rival of the BYD Dolphin, JAC Motors announced in July its electric car called YIWEY 3, which has already been confirmed in Brazil.

In China, this will be the main competitor to the Dolphin, as part of the company’s strategy to launch a subbrand under the JAC group, which will feature other products. Its design is somewhat retro, featuring round LED headlights, a slightly oval rear, and hidden door handles, resembling a neo-retro car.
