The federal government denied a poster that went viral on WhatsApp claiming that Bolsa Família would have received an adjustment of 6.97%, “twice” the increase applied to pensions. According to the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance (MDS), Bolsa Família has had no adjustments since 2023, making comparison impossible.
The false piece, which circulated at the end of November, mimics the look of a newspaper clipping and says:
“Pensioners, please share! Liking is not enough. Adjustment of pensions. I just want to know what the justification is for Bolsa Família, where no one works, having double the increase of pensioners who have worked their whole lives.

We are over thirty million pensioners! We cannot allow them to distribute our money to those who have never worked; (is this the law?). If you forward this to only 2 friends in the first hours, in 28 hours the entire Brazilian population of pensioners will become aware of this absurdity.”
– Pensioners: 3.71%
– Bolsa Família: 6.97%”.
The Ministry of Social Security explains that the adjustment of 3.71% given to pensioners who receive above the minimum wage reflects exactly the variation of the INPC in 2023, as determined by legislation. Furthermore, Social Security pays 24.3 million pensions, not “over 30 million,” as the rumor claims.
The message is false for three main reasons:
- Bolsa Família did not receive an adjustment — the number 6.97% was made up;
- The INPC for 2023 was exactly 3.71%, and this is the legal index for adjusting benefits above the minimum;
- The number of pensioners quoted is incorrect, artificially inflating the argument of the poster.
Official bodies warn that contents resembling newspaper clippings and alarmist tones are often created to manipulate pensioners and generate engagement based on indignation. Citizens receiving such messages should:
– not share before verifying;
– confirm the information directly on the INSS, MDS, or Ministry of Social Security website;
– consult fact-checking services, such as Fato ou Fake;
– notify family and friends when identifying that the content is false.
According to MDS and the Ministry of Social Security, this type of misinformation harms millions of beneficiaries and creates misleading comparisons between pension and assistance benefits to generate conflict on social media.
