After Completing Infrastructure Works with an Investment of R$ 74 Million by the Government of Pará, the Santarém Terminal Can Now Accommodate Large Vessels for Cargo and Passenger Transport

The Santarém river terminal was handed over to the public last Wednesday, (04/20), marking a significant advancement for quality infrastructure in cargo and passenger transport in the area. The total investment by the Government of Pará was R$ 74 million, and the works ensured a highly safe and efficient infrastructure to accommodate large vessels during operations at the site.

R$ 74 Million Investment from the Government of Pará in the Santarém River Terminal Ensured Necessary Infrastructure for Safer Cargo and Passenger Transport, in Addition to Accommodating Larger Vessels

Located on the banks of the Tapajós River, the Santarém Passenger and Cargo River Terminal – Joaquim da Costa Pereira, in the Lower Amazon, was delivered to the public during an inauguration ceremony. The total investment by the state government is estimated at R$ 74 million, and the infrastructure works in the 22,000-square-meter area now allow for a total of three thousand passengers per day, as well as accommodating large vessels for cargo and the local population.

In addition, within the infrastructure works package that was carried out, 1,205 long chairs, free Wi-Fi, and two escalators were installed in the terminal’s boarding area to ensure greater accessibility for PWDs who need access to the terminal. The location also now has a parking area of 5,800 square meters that includes spaces for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, in addition to taxi and bus points, a project completed after the government’s million-dollar investment.

Another main focus of the terminal’s infrastructure works project, besides accommodating passengers, was to develop suitable facilities for transporting cargo on large vessels. Thus, the cargo terminal now includes a warehouse of over six thousand square meters that is used for both the storage of products for sale and for passengers to store their belongings. The infrastructure works at the location also created over 800 direct and indirect jobs for state residents, contributing to local development.

ACES Highlights the Importance of Infrastructure Works at the Santarém Terminal to Ensure Safe and Efficient Cargo and Passenger Transport

One of the main problems that the state of Pará faces regarding the waterway modal is the lack of adequate infrastructure to accommodate large vessels for cargo and passenger transport. However, the delivery of the new terminal in Santarém guarantees a structure fully designed to receive large vessels, such as cruise ships, which should boost tourism activity in the region, generating jobs and income, in addition to facilitating the flow of products.

In this regard, José Roberto Branco Ramos, president of the Santarém Commercial and Business Association (ACES), commented that “It will bring more dignity to the people of Santarém and will improve the control of goods. It is something revolutionary that the municipality is receiving. A historic and strategic project. It was something we needed for a long time. The terminal will make a huge difference for people. The municipality is one of the main hubs in the region for passenger and cargo transport.”

The Santarém Passenger and Cargo River Terminal – Joaquim da Costa Pereira will be the ninth port delivered in the region, and the Government of Pará plans to continue with an investment plan aimed at this sector in the state, in order to ensure an improvement in the quality of life for residents and an economic flow for the state.
