The Federal Government Confirmed the Expansion of the Gas Allowance, Which Will Guarantee Free Cooking Gas Cylinders for More Than 15 Million Families Registered in CadÚnico. Understand How the New Model of the Benefit Will Be.
The Federal Government is preparing to launch the expansion of the Gas Allowance program, which will now assist more than 15.5 million Brazilian families, equivalent to more than 46 million people in situations of social vulnerability.
The measure was confirmed by the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, in an interview on the program Bom Dia, Ministro, broadcast by Canal Gov, from the Brazilian Communication Company.
According to Rui Costa, the initiative aims to ensure dignity, food security, and social protection.

In addition to easing families’ budgets, the minister emphasized that the measure will reduce the risks of domestic accidents caused by the use of dangerous alternatives for cooking, such as alcohol.
Focus on Those Registered in CadÚnico
The bill that will provide the basis for the expansion of the Gas Allowance will be aimed at families registered in CadÚnico with an income equal to or less than half the minimum wage.
Currently, about 5.6 million families receive the benefit, but the goal is to increase that number and triple the program’s reach.
This restructuring is considered strategic to tackle the so-called energy poverty, a problem that affects thousands of Brazilian households that cannot afford the price of cooking gas.
Functioning of the Benefit
Today, beneficiaries receive an amount of R$ 108 every two months. This amount corresponds to 100% of the national average price of a 13 kg gas cylinder, according to calculations made by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP).
However, Rui Costa explained that this cash payment model does not fully meet the needs, as there is a significant difference in regional prices.
“Today it is a financial subsidy, a fixed amount that the person receives. But this amount is not enough to buy the gas cylinder. Supposedly, it would correspond to the national average price, but there are differences of up to R$ 60 more than the average price,” said the minister.
In light of this disparity, the government intends to adopt a new transfer method: instead of cash deposits, families registered in CadÚnico will receive credit directly at gas retailers.
Thus, when going to an authorized point, they will only need to present their CPF to collect the gas cylinder, which will be paid for by the government.
Expected Investment and Social Impact
The proposal includes a significant increase in resources to support the expansion of the Gas Allowance.
The amount allocated may reach R$ 13.6 billion by 2026, ensuring financial support to maintain service for millions of families in all regions of the country.
According to Minister Rui Costa, this change goes far beyond the economic aspect.
The goal is to provide security and reduce the number of burns, especially among children and women, who often suffer accidents while trying to cook with alcohol or other improvised fuels.
Expectations of Benefited Families
With the change in the benefit format, the expectation is that more than 15 million families registered in CadÚnico will have direct access to the gas cylinder, without the need to supplement amounts from their own pockets.
For many, this change represents not only savings but also dignity and quality of life.
The new model of the Gas Allowance is expected to be implemented as early as next week, marking one of the government’s main social actions this year.
