Although it seems something purely digital, ChatGPT consumes physical resources, like energy and even water for server cooling. In this content, you check 5 curious facts about the functioning of this AI

ChatGPT has become a household name in a short time. Since its launch in 2022, OpenAI’s chatbot has been used by millions of people all over the world. But despite its popularity, many important details about the AI tool are still little known to the public.

Some involve the consumption of natural resources, operating costs, and even technical limitations. Below are five curious facts about ChatGPT that stand out.

Water And Energy Consumption Surprises

The first curiosity involves a little-discussed topic: the environmental impact of ChatGPT. To answer simple questions, the AI needs to perform thousands of calculations in data centers. These locations generate heat while processing information and, for that reason, require cooling systems.

The cooling can be done with water or electricity. In regions where there is a risk of drought, this can affect the availability of the natural resource. According to the newspaper The Washington Post, ChatGPT consumes about 519 milliliters of water to generate 100 words.

This is equivalent to almost a common water bottle. In the same process, 0.14 kWh of electricity is used, enough to keep 14 LED bulbs on for one hour. Even simple tasks, like answering a question, require high energy use.

Daily Operating Costs Are High

Another relevant point is the cost of keeping the tool active. It is estimated that operating ChatGPT can cost between US$ 100,000 and US$ 700,000 per day. In monthly amounts, that represents something between US$ 3 million and US$ 21 million.

These amounts include payments for servers, energy consumption, employee salaries, and the use of Microsoft’s cloud, known as Azure Cloud.

The rent for just one cluster of this infrastructure costs about US$ 3 per hour. Microsoft is, in fact, one of the main investors in OpenAI. Between 2019 and 2023, the company invested more than US$ 13 billion in the project.

Massive Volume Of Information Trained ChatGPT’s AI

The responsiveness of ChatGPT comes from its training with large amounts of text. The acronym GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer. The Artificial Intelligence was “taught” with approximately 570 GB of texts available on the internet.

To give an idea of the volume, this represents the content of about 1.3 million books. It also equals three times the textual collection of the Library of Congress, considered the largest in the world.

This training allows the tool to understand language patterns and respond naturally. But not always accurately.

Popularity Grew Rapidly

The growth of ChatGPT was a phenomenon. In the first five days after launch, the AI tool already had one million users. For comparison, Facebook took two months to reach that number. Spotify took five months, and Netflix, three and a half years.

Currently, more than 300 million people use ChatGPT weekly. The data comes from OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, reported to the newspaper The New York Times in December 2024. According to him, the chatbot receives over 1 billion messages per day from users around the world.

Artificial Intelligence Does Not Always Understand What It Responds

Despite the fluency in responses, ChatGPT does not understand content like a human does. This is because the tool lacks consciousness. What it does is analyze context and choose words based on statistical calculations. Thus, it seeks to provide the most probable and coherent answer to what was requested.

This process can lead to a phenomenon known as “AI hallucination.” In some cases, ChatGPT generates answers that seem correct but are not true. This happens because the system prioritizes speed and clarity over accuracy.

Another important point is that the training of the tool included texts from the internet, many of which contain incorrect or biased information. Therefore, critical use of Artificial Intelligence is essential. This way, it avoids propagating stereotypes or false content.

Powerful Tool But Needs Attention

ChatGPT is useful in many day-to-day tasks, such as text summarization, content creation, translation, and even planning. However, the behind-the-scenes of its functioning reveals important challenges. From the use of natural resources to issues of accuracy in responses, it is necessary to know the technology more in-depth to use it responsibly.
