Accident on BR-040 in Juiz de Fora Leaves Dead and Injured After Collision Between Urban and Intercity Bus. Traffic Remains Blocked in MG.
An accident on BR-040, in Juiz de Fora, left four people dead and 31 injured on the afternoon of this Friday (5). The collision occurred at km 779, in the Bairro Distrito Industrial, around 2:30 PM, involving a public transportation bus from the city and an intercity vehicle from Viação Cometa, which was heading from Belo Horizonte to Rio de Janeiro.
According to the Fire Department, after the impact, the urban bus overturned on the track. Among the deceased victims is a child, as confirmed by the Municipality of Juiz de Fora.

Witnesses reported that the Cometa bus may have hit the rear of the urban vehicle that was on the 743 line (Toledos District). There is still no official information on what caused the accident in MG.

The driver of the intercity bus was in shock at the scene. The bus had left Belo Horizonte at 9:20 AM bound for Rio de Janeiro.
Traffic Blocked and Detour on the Highway
After the bus accident in Juiz de Fora, BR-040 was completely closed in the direction of Rio de Janeiro. Traffic had to be diverted via exit 778, directing vehicles to the city’s Distrito Industrial.
The concessionaires and traffic authorities advised drivers to be extra cautious and seek alternative routes due to the slowdown in the area.
Firefighters and Samu Response
Teams from Samu sent three advanced support vehicles to the location. The victims were rescued and taken to different hospitals in the city:
- Emergency Hospital (HPS);
- North UPA;
- Therezinha de Jesus Hospital and Maternity (HMTJ).
According to the firefighters, at least ten people were in serious condition. A child with multiple traumas was taken to the maternity hospital for emergency care.
Support for the Victims’ Families
The Municipality of Juiz de Fora issued an official statement lamenting the tragedy and reported that it mobilized teams from the Health, Urban Mobility, Security, and Social Assistance departments to provide support to the victims and families.
“Social workers from the Social Assistance Department and the Human Rights Department are being directed to HPS to assist in the care of the victims and families. In this moment of pain, the Municipality regrets the fatalities and extends its condolences to the victims’ families,” the statement informed.
Companies Involved
The Consórcio Via JF, responsible for the city’s public transportation, was contacted but has not yet commented on the accident in Juiz de Fora. Viação Cometa also had not released a statement at the time of publication.
Repercussions and Next Steps
This serious accident on BR-040 in MG has raised a red flag for safety on the stretch between Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, one of the busiest in the country.
Local authorities are expected to investigate the causes of the crash and assess whether there was a mechanical failure, human error, or problems with highway signage.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims are awaiting information about the names of the injured and deceased passengers, which have not yet been officially released.
