When the authorities reached the car, the vehicle had already traveled about 26 kilometers since the report.
The Tesla was near the city of Linköping and continued moving, with the autopilot activated. Despite the police’s attempts to get the driver’s attention, the man did not wake up.
The officers tried to steer the car toward an exit, but they couldn’t. The pursuit continued for several kilometers.
When the driver finally woke up, he abruptly turned the steering wheel to the right. A police car had to make an emergency maneuver to avoid a collision.
The vehicle only stopped at a gas station, ending the chase after 40 kilometers. The scare was significant.
The driver claimed he had not slept the night before and was stressed because he needed to return the car.
Initially, he tried to say that he kept one eye open the whole time, but later changed his story.
According to the Swedish newspaper Vi Bilägare, the man confessed he was embarrassed by the incident. He attributed his behavior to fatigue and the comfort of the car.
He said: “I am very embarrassed, it was due to exhaustion. I had a Tesla with autopilot, which made me feel very comfortable.”
Despite the technology in the vehicle, the episode reinforces the limits of autopilot. The system does not exempt the driver from the responsibility of staying alert.
Safe driving remains a human obligation, even with increasingly advanced cars.
