A man accepted to pay quarterly support (about R$ 1,300) for two cats. The agreement provides for annual adjustment by the official inflation index and a duration of up to 10 years!
A “good” divorce… with billing for the cats. You’ve seen couples separate and argue over dog custody. But in Turkey, a man came out of the divorce with a very specific obligation: to pay support for cats. Yes, cats. And it’s not “symbolic help”, no — the amount is quarterly and was included in the agreement approved by the Family Court of Istanbul.
What the Family Court approved in the divorce agreement
The couple had been married for two years and decided to end the union amicably. In the protocol approved by the Family Court of Istanbul, it was defined that:
- The woman would keep “custody” of the two cats;
- The ex-husband committed to paying support of 10,000 Turkish Liras every three months (about R$ 1,300) to cover the animals’ expenses;
- The case was treated as a curious precedent in the country for establishing a structured and long-term financial support focused on pets.
The Adjustment Rule: It’s Not Guessing, It’s Official Index
The divorce protocol is quite thorough. The amount of “support” will be adjusted annually based on the official inflation index — in local news, this is linked to the CPI (consumer price index) and, in some cases, also to the PPI (producer price index), which are indicators used in financial adjustments in the country.

The end of Japan? Population is disappearing, country loses more than 3 million inhabitants in just five years and birth rate falls for the tenth consecutive year, raising alarm about demographic collapse and lack of workers.
To give an idea of the economic context, official data available from the Turkish Central Bank (with figures from the statistical agency TÜİK) shows that the annual inflation measured by the CPI was 30.89% in December 2025.
Paying Support for Up to 10 Years… and with a “Mourning Clause”
Another noteworthy point: the agreement provides a maximum period of ten years for the payments, a period considered to cover the average life expectancy of cats. If one of the animals dies, the corresponding amount is cut.
“Paying Support” in Quotes: Why It Matters Legally?
Lawyer Aylin Esra Eren explained that, under the Turkish Civil Code, the amount cannot be legally classified as “alimony” (a right reserved for spouses and children). However, when there is an agreement between the parties, the division of expenses becomes valid — and that’s exactly what happened here.
And she summarized the logic of the commitment with a very direct sentence (kept in full):
“Cats will have to incur costs for care, supervision, veterinary expenses, food, medications, and vaccinations, as if they were children of a couple”, she told the newspaper.
Who Kept the Cats? The Practical Detail That Mattered
The decision regarding which of the ex-spouses the animals would stay with was based on who is the registered owner of the microchips of the cats — the woman.
This point aligns with a very current reality in Turkey: the country has been reinforcing the identification and registration of pets via microchip and national database (PETVET), with deadlines and oversight alerts. A recent report explains that veterinarians register the animal’s and the owner’s details in the system, and the chip serves to identify the registered owner when the pet is taken to a clinic.
Why Shared Custody Didn’t Enter the Story
The lawyer emphasizes that, considering animal welfare, the decision for a fixed home makes sense — especially for felines. And here’s the complete statement, preserved from her text:
“Considering that divorced couples no longer live in a shared house, cats, by their very nature, are not meant to be taken from one house to another. They need to live in a fixed home. We cannot keep transporting cats, both for health and care reasons, as well as psychological reasons”, said Eren.
In practice, the divorce ended, but the responsibility for the cats remained formalized — with value, duration, adjustment, and well-defined triggers. And the fact that this was validated in the Family Court of Istanbul shows how consensual agreements can “weave” solutions that the law has not yet detailed precisely when it comes to pets.
What if this trend catches on in Brazil?! What do you think about paying support for cats after divorce? Leave your comment, and if this case surprised you, share the post with someone who loves pets.
