Man Breaks Swarovski Crystal Chair in Italian Museum While Trying to Take Photo; Artwork Inspired by Van Gogh Was on Public Display

What was supposed to be just a memento turned into a headache for the Palazzo Maffei museum in Verona, Italy. A visitor trying to take a picture pretending to sit in an exhibited chair ended up breaking the artwork.

The episode was recorded on video and shared by the museum itself on social media. In the footage, the man can be seen preparing for the pose when he loses his balance and damages the piece.

According to the museum, he and the woman accompanying him waited for the security guards to leave the room before carrying out the act. She had already repeated the gesture minutes earlier, without consequences.

The damaged artwork is called “Van Gogh” and was created by Nicola Bolla. The object is a chair entirely covered with Swarovski crystals, extremely delicate, inspired by the world of painter Vincent Van Gogh.

The museum regretted the incident in a post on Instagram, stating that the couple ignored all the rules of respect for art and cultural heritage. “For days, we didn’t know if it would be possible to restore it. But we managed,” the team informed, who are now celebrating the recovery of the piece.

More than just reporting the fact, the museum intends to use the case as an example. “We want to turn this episode into an opportunity for reflection and public awareness: art should be admired, experienced, but above all respected. Always.
