Canoas City Hall Dismisses 600 Employees After Contract Ends; Healthcare System Faces Overcrowding and Risk of Collapse

The Canoas City Hall dismissed about 600 employees from the Nossa Senhora das Graças Hospital on Wednesday (4). The decision was made after the municipality chose not to renew the contract with the Hospital Management and Health Sciences Institute, which ended in March. The professionals had been working for about a year in an improvised sector at the Canoas Emergency Care Hospital (HPSC).

According to the City Hall, part of the services provided in the so-called “HPSC wing” will be transferred back to the Nossa Senhora das Graças Hospital.

This unit, which is 100% linked to the Unified Health System (SUS), has 118 available beds. The HPSC, the main urgent and emergency center in the city, has been closed since the flood that occurred in May 2024.

The expected reopening of the unit is in December, when the recovery works are set to be completed.

Meanwhile, the health situation in the region is worsening. Hospitals in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region are facing overcrowding. This situation has worsened with the increase in cases of acute respiratory syndrome, further stressing the local healthcare system.

Given the critical scenario, the Regional Medical Council of Rio Grande do Sul (Cremers) has again demanded immediate intervention from the state government.

According to the entity, the situation has already reached a level of collapse, putting patients at risk and compromising medical assistance.

Cremers advocates that state authorities adopt quick, transparent, and effective measures to stabilize health services and ensure adequate care for the population of Canoas and more than 150 municipalities that depend on the city’s hospital network.
