Unusual selection for The Black Cat brought together black cats, anxious owners, and strict visual requirements behind the scenes in Hollywood
In 1961, one of the most curious selections behind the scenes of cinema took place in Hollywood, during the production of The Black Cat, a segment associated with the horror film Tales of Terror.
On this occasion, 152 black cats were brought by their owners for a kind of audition. The goal was to choose felines that would appear in the recordings of the production inspired by the story of Edgar Allan Poe.
The scene was captured by photographer Ralph Crane, from LIFE Magazine, and later became part of the LIFE Photo Collection and Google Arts & Culture.

Audition for black cats drew attention in Hollywood
The selection seemed simple but had a very specific requirement. The animals needed to be completely black, without visible spots on their bodies.
Because of this, some cats were disqualified for having white paws, light noses, or visible marks. The intention was to find felines with an appearance suitable for the story’s dark atmosphere.
The number of animals made the moment even more unusual. After all, more than 150 cats gathered to compete for a spot in a film was not something common behind the scenes in Hollywood.

Main role had already been defined before the selection
Despite the large movement, the feline protagonist had already been chosen before the audition. According to LIFE Magazine, the main role went to a professional cat, already accustomed to the filming environment.
Even so, the selection was not useless. Some animals were used in secondary roles, especially as extras and stand-ins for specific scenes.
At the end of the process, seven cats were chosen as possible reserves. The selection mainly considered the appearance of the felines in front of the cameras.
Backstage became one of the most curious stories in cinema
Over time, the audition of the black cats turned into a small legend in the Hollywood backstage.
The episode was marked not only by the number of animals but also by the combination of horror cinema, superstition, and film production.
The photos taken by Ralph Crane helped preserve the moment. The images show the cats lined up with their owners, in a rare and quite visual scene.
Source reinforces details of the unusual selection
The story was also recovered by Time magazine, which highlighted the participation of 152 black cats and the disqualification of animals with light spots.
Thus, the case remains a curious record of a time when even an apparently simple choice could become a major event backstage.
In the end, the audition of The Black Cat entered the memory of cinema precisely because of this: it turned ordinary cats, anxious owners, and a specific visual requirement into one of the most unusual scenes in Hollywood.
