Announced directly from The Hague and Dubai, the giants of the port industry, APM Terminals and DP World, are betting big on green technologies. The proposal is to initiate comprehensive electrification in the port environment, aiming for the global decarbonization of terminals.
The Future of Ports: Greener and Less Carbon
Based on in-depth studies, the two companies have a strategic plan: to migrate port equipment, specifically container handling equipment (CHE), to 100% electric versions. It is estimated that this transition, with the full commitment of the sector, could be completed in a period of 2 to 8 years.
The Port of Kalundborg, Eurogate, and Smart Freight Centre have already shown support for this new direction, endorsing the white paper proposed by the companies, which emphasizes the urgent electrification of CHE.

Understanding the Impact of CHE
Container handling equipment (CHE) is not just equipment; it is a driving force in port operations. In 2020, this fleet, estimated to be between 100,000 and 120,000 units, handled an impressive value of US$ 8.1 trillion, corresponding to 815 million TEUs across 940 global container ports. However, it was also responsible for emitting 10 to 15 million tons of carbon dioxide.
Recent research brings good news: the transition to electric CHE is not only feasible but also financially sensible. The complete shift, replacing diesel with electric batteries, becomes the most accessible and attractive option on the horizon of 2 to 8 years, if proactive measures are taken now by all stakeholders in the sector.
“It’s not just about business; it’s about accelerating our ecological agenda. The turning point for the electrification of CHE is within our reach, and we need joint actions from the entire port ecosystem”, emphasizes Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals.
Tiemen Meester, from DP World, shares the same sentiment, highlighting that electrification in the sector is a realistic and economical solution to reduce carbon emissions.
The research suggests actions such as implementing net zero operations in port concessions and collaboration between terminal operators and manufacturers to increase demand.
Sahar Rashidbeigi, from APM Terminals, underscores the vision: “Our goal is to create healthy and efficient port environments. Electrifying equipment is a practical solution that can be quickly implemented if we work collectively.”
The ultimate goal? APM Terminals and DP World aim to mobilize the entire sector to embrace the electrification of CHE, paving the way for net zero port operations.
