Keeping An Eye On The Growth Of Rival BYD, Chinese Manufacturer Invests Heavily To Expand Production And Seek Protagonism In The Global Electric And Hybrid Car Market
The Chinese automaker Changan has taken an important step to compete with BYD and Geely, leaders in the automotive sector in China. On May 15, the company inaugurated a new factory in Thailand with an initial production of 100,000 vehicles per year.
Chinese Automaker Wants To Climb The Rankings
In 2024, BYD sold over 3.7 million cars and led the Chinese ranking. Geely came in second with 1.77 million, followed by FAW Volkswagen with 1.6 million. Changan finished the year in fourth place, with 1.36 million units, ahead of Chery, which recorded 1.35 million.
By 2025, the numbers follow a similar trend. BYD has already surpassed the mark of 1 million vehicles sold. Geely is close to reaching that number. Chery totaled 776,141 sales by April. Changan, in turn, has accumulated 562,206 registered vehicles in the first four months of the year.

New Factory Seeks To Expand International Presence
To compete with the sector leaders, Changan bets on global expansion. The new Thai factory will produce cars under the Changan, Deepal, and Avatr brands. The focus of production will be Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
The company’s goal is to reach a maximum capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year by 2027. Currently, the plant operates at half that volume. The expectation is that the unit will help increase the manufacturer’s numbers and strengthen its presence outside of China.
Bet On New Energy Vehicles
The strategy of the Chinese automaker in the Thai market involves only new energy cars. This includes 100% electric models, extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
With this new phase of international production, Changan seeks to close the gap that separates it from BYD and Geely, companies that dominate sales both inside and outside Chinese territory.
It will be in the coming months that the market will assess whether Changan’s expansion will result in a stronger presence in global rankings.
