Government Will Reevaluate 800 Thousand Insured; Measure Aims to Combat Irregularities and Generate Savings for Public Finances
Thousands of disability retirees in Brazil may have their benefits suspended. The National Institute of Social Security (INSS) has initiated a new round of reviews, also called a “fining” process, to assess whether beneficiaries still meet the legal requirements. According to reports from Rádio Tupi and CNN Brasil, the measure is expected to affect around 802 thousand insured individuals and aims to reinforce control of public spending. For specialists, the reevaluation may represent savings for the government, but it also raises concerns for those who depend on the retirement pension.
Who Will Be Called for the Retirement Review
The INSS will use different forms of notification to summon the insured individuals: messages via the Meu INSS app, SMS, letters, bank notices, and notices published in the Official Gazette of the Union. Attendance to the medical examination is mandatory, and those who are called must appear for the assessment. According to Rádio Tupi, the focus is on beneficiaries who have been receiving disability retirement for more than two years and who have not undergone a new medical evaluation during that time. The INSS aims to ensure that the benefit continues to be paid only to those who truly need it.
Not all insured individuals will need to undergo the review. According to information from CNN Brasil, exempt from the summons are disability retirees aged 60 or older, those aged 55 who have been receiving disability benefits for at least 15 years, and those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. These groups are considered more vulnerable or with a low probability of regaining work capability, and therefore will not be summoned in this cycle.

What Can Happen After the Medical Examination
If the medical examination identifies that the insured individual has regained the ability to work, the INSS may suspend the payment of the retirement pension. However, the beneficiary has the right to appeal the decision. To do this, they must present medical reports and examinations that prove their health condition. CNN Brasil emphasizes that, in many cases, presenting updated medical documentation can make a difference in the outcome of the analysis. Therefore, keeping documents organized is essential.
Review May Generate Billion-Dollar Savings for the Government
According to estimates released by InfoMoney, the federal government expects to save up to R$ 10 billion with the new round of benefits reviews, including pensions. The measure seeks to balance the accounts of Social Security and ensure that resources are allocated to those who truly need them. The strategy is part of a larger effort by the Ministry of Social Security to review payments considered irregular or that have not undergone recent control. This saving, according to the government, could be redirected to other priority areas.
Increased Attention for Those Who Depend on Retirement
For the insured individuals who will be summoned, it is essential to monitor notifications through official channels and keep their information updated in Meu INSS. Failure to attend the medical examination may lead to immediate suspension of the benefit. Rádio Tupi warns that a lack of response to the summons will be interpreted as a lack of interest in maintaining retirement. Therefore, careful monitoring and preparation for the medical evaluation are indispensable to avoid disruptions.
