The JBS Projects for the Amazon

The JBS Fund for the Amazon aims to promote actions for forest conservation and preservation and sustainable development in the region. The organization analyzed over 50 project ideas from proposals received through the website or prospected by the team.

Nine initiatives were invited to submit preliminary projects, which were reviewed by the JBS Technical Committee, composed of 11 members appointed by research institutes and third-sector organizations. These are professionals recognized in the environmental and sustainable development fields, with extensive experience in the Amazon’s reality and who have previously worked on projects with significant impacts in the Amazon region.

The Purpose of the Contributions to Be Made in the Amazon

According to Joanita Maestri Karoleski, president of the JBS Fund for the Amazon, the projects receiving JBS investments will develop the forest’s bioeconomy, helping to add value to natural products, and also contributing to environmental preservation and socioeconomic development.

Andrea Azevedo, director of programs and projects for the Fund, stated that one of the focuses of the projects was to support those that value the individuals at the base of the forest chains, such as extractivists, indigenous peoples, and other traditional communities managing community businesses.

The Six Projects Supported by the JBS Fund for the Amazon

The first six initiatives selected by the JBS Fund for the Amazon will work on a wide range of activities in the biome. The implementation of agroforestry systems, which transform cultivation and livestock areas into carbon-absorbing sites, will occur through the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices.

The value chains of pirarucu and açaí will be strengthened by investments in production certification, value addition in processing, and capacity building in managing community businesses. Here are the names of the projects approved by the JBS Fund for the Amazon: RestaurAmazônia; Inclusive Community Economies Program in the Communities of Bailique and Beira Amazonas, Amapá; Fair and Sustainable Fishing Project; AMAZ (Accelerator & Impact Investments); Credit Leverage for the Forest Chains; Technical Partnership with Embrapa.
