Project Led by 27-Year-Old Revived 100-Year-Old Abandoned Train Car, Overcame Logistical Challenges, Preserved Historical Elements, and Created Unique Lodging, Now Profitable, with High Daily Rates and Strong Regional Tourist Appeal
Last year, a case caught attention. A 27-year-old man transformed a 100-year-old abandoned train car into an Airbnb in Idaho, after investing £118,000, achieving an annual income of about £90,000 with daily rates between £256 and £275.
Unlikely Purchase and Critical Condition of the Car
Isaac French acquired the old train car for just £2,300, buying it from a farmer who lived near the location where it was abandoned.
According to him, most people saw no value in that old structure, but his father identified potential where others saw only waste and advanced deterioration.

Mother of four faces financial difficulties in São Paulo, swaps jobs outside the home for sweet and savory pies, and turns the kitchen into a source of income to support the family while studying nursing to change her children’s future.
The car was in terrible condition, with much of the wood rotting, algae growing in some areas, and approximately 20 cats living inside.
Isaac stated that for nearly everyone, the car seemed irreparable, reinforcing the surprise of many when they learned that the project actually moved forward.
Logistical Challenges and Prolonged Restoration
Father and son took more than two years to find someone willing to help remove the carriage, which is 18.6 meters long.
After they managed to move the car, the duo dedicated six months solely to the structural restoration process and adaptation for lodging.
The total cost of the project reached £118,000, including the construction of the deck, flooring renovation, complete electrical installation, and purchase of new furniture.
Isaac has seven brothers and two sisters, almost all with construction skills, allowing the family to carry out much of the work.
Faithful Reconstruction and Internal Environment
The family found an old photograph of the car, enabling them to faithfully recreate original marks and inscriptions present in the historic structure.
The old main passenger hall was transformed into a living room with a compact kitchen, decorated with vintage furniture chosen by Isaac’s mother.
The cargo area became a space for coats and luggage, along with the inclusion of a bathroom with a functional sliding door.
In the old mailroom, a bedroom with a double bed and comfortable furniture was created, reinforcing the proposal for an intimate accommodation.
Experience Offered and Financial Return
The Airbnb also features a sauna, positioned to offer panoramic views of the surrounding wildlife.
Daily rates vary between £256 and £275, an amount that Isaac believes could be higher, but prefers to keep accessible to not deter visitors. The figures refer to last year.
He describes it as gratifying to welcome people from different backgrounds interested in experiencing a preserved piece of railway history.
The family earns about £90,000 a year from the car, reinforcing the economic viability of the project, according to reports to CNBC.
Isaac asserts that what he appreciates most is the sense of history already present in the space and believes that old cars and buildings await global rediscovery.
