Strategically located in Itaguaí, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, these units have a considerable installed capacity of 560MW, which connects directly to the national electrical grid, ensuring energy efficiency and sustainability.

The project related to hydrocyclones, which is a novelty in Brazil, involves significant investment of about 2 million reais and is estimated to last 18 months. In synergy with ultraviolet radiation, this equipment seeks to mitigate the growth of microorganisms sustainably, without using chemicals, thus improving the effectiveness of water filtration on ships.

Innovation In Water Resource Management

Thermal energy production offshore requires an efficient cooling system for the Powerships’ engines. As João Vieira, Project Manager at Karpowership, emphasizes, inadequate water quality can damage pumps and compromise the cooling system. The company utilizes seawater captured at less than 10 meters depth, which often contains sediments and microorganisms.

As a result, the filters for water purification require regular cleaning, which involves careful disassembly, washing, and reassembly. Marjorie Antunes, Environmental Manager at Karpowership Brazil, notes that the disposal of waste from these filters is always directed to licensed companies according to Brazilian legislation.

Strategic Partnerships For Research & Development

Karpowership is committed to advancing innovation and technological development in the electricity sector, promoting partnerships with universities and renowned researchers. “We want the support and contribution of Brazilian researchers,” Vieira emphasizes again. The Research & Development project will be led by Prof. Dr. Rodrigo José Corrêa from the UFRJ Photochemistry Laboratory, also contributing to the training of new scientists.

The developed equipment has the potential to be adapted to other industries that use water in their processes, expanding the scope and impact of the technology. In this endeavor, the participation of PhDs and Masters is essential, enhancing the technical-scientific knowledge of the Brazilian community.
