A partnership between Kia and the Korean National Police Agency has given rise to a new concept in public safety: the PV5 Patrol Vehicle. Expected to begin its operational phase in June 2026, the model was developed to serve as a preventive patrol unit, as reported by the VRUM website.
The main differentiator of this project is the transformation of a conventional electric vehicle into a mobile intelligence hub, capable of monitoring crowds and identifying crimes in real-time through automated systems.
The proposal focuses on rapid response, utilizing technologies that allow security forces to operate in locations where physical access for agents or a common automobile would be unfeasible.

Aerial Surveillance and Intelligent Monitoring in Kia’s Patrol Vehicle
The main technological innovation of this Patrol Vehicle is located on its roof, which houses an automated base for a high-precision drone. The system is designed for the equipment to take off automatically as soon as the vehicle arrives at an incident, immediately initiating an aerial patrol over the area.
The technological support for this aerial unit includes:
- Thermal camera: The drone can locate people by heat, facilitating searches in low visibility conditions.
- Long-range zoom: It has a zoom capability of up to 90x to monitor details from a distance.
- Artificial Intelligence: The technology assists in identifying accidents, crowds, or criminal activities.
- Recharge autonomy: After the mission, the drone returns autonomously to the Patrol Vehicle’s roof to recharge its battery using the van’s own system.
Total Vision and Risk Detection with AI
In addition to aerial support, the PV5 Patrol Vehicle features a system of three external cameras that ensure a 360° view, eliminating any blind spots for officers. These cameras work in conjunction with artificial intelligence capable of analyzing crowd behavior and identifying individuals by specific clothing or accessories.
The system is trained to immediately detect critical situations, such as the presence of armed individuals or fallen persons who need assistance.
All captured images and alerts are transmitted instantly to the multimedia center located inside the van, allowing the team to make tactical decisions based on precise visual data.
Electric Efficiency and Specialized Design
Despite the high investment in surveillance technology, the mechanical part of the Patrol Vehicle remains unchanged, maintaining the original powertrain of Kia’s electric model. The choice of an electric platform reinforces the urban efficiency necessary for constant patrolling.
Visually, the model presents a strong identity, with police livery in blue and yellow over the black and white bodywork. This project demonstrates that the future of the sector is not just in transportation, but in the vehicle’s ability to act as an active operational support tool.
