According to the investigations, between 2002 and 2018, three companies established more than 200 ship charter contracts in amounts that exceed 6 billion reais.
The targets of the 70th phase of Operation Lava Jato are: the shipowner Maersk, responsible for the vessel, and the shipbrokers Tide Maratime and Ferchem, companies that act as intermediaries in the negotiations and suspected of having benefited from privileged information that gave them competitive advantages, through the payment of bribes to Petrobras employees.
According to the Federal Public Ministry, Maersk signed 69 charter contracts with Petrobras, between 2002 and 2012, in the approximate amount of 968 million reais; Tide Maritime, 87 contracts with the state-owned company, between 2005 and 2018, worth 2,8 billion reais; while Ferchem, 114 contracts, between 2005 and 2015, worth more than 2,7 billion reais.
The investigations related to Maersk were based on the award-winning denunciation of Paulo Roberto Costa, former Petrobras supply director. Privileged information would be conveyed by Wanderley Granda, who set up a shipbroker company to pass on bribes to the former director.
Charter contracts entered into by Petrobras with the intermediation of shipbrokers Tide Maritime and Ferchem are also under investigation, there are contracts with validity beyond 2020, in global values above 100 million dollars. These companies and their representatives, in addition to former Petrobras employees, are the target of today's investigations.
On the cell phone of Cláudio Genu, former treasurer of the Progressive Party, already convicted in Mensalão and Lava Jato, dialogues were collected that indicate that he worked at Petrobras and directed charter contracts for shipowners represented by Tide Maritime and Ferchem.
Former Petrobras chartering manager, Dalmo Monteiro, is being investigated for acting on behalf of Ferchem, recommending shipowners to hire the company.
Petrobras defense note
“Petrobras works closely with the authorities that carry out Operation Lava Jato and is recognized by the Federal Public Ministry itself and by the Supreme Court as a victim of the crimes that have been revealed.
The company has been collaborating with investigations since 2014, and acts as a co-plaintiff with the Federal Public Ministry and the Union in 18 ongoing administrative impropriety actions, in addition to being assistant to the prosecution in 60 criminal actions.
It should be noted that Petrobras has already received more than BRL 4 billion in compensation, including amounts that were repatriated from Switzerland by Brazilian public authorities.”
