In Recorded Video at the Granja do Torto, President Lula Explained That the Rise in Food Prices Reflects the Higher Demand Generated by the Increase in the Buying Power of Brazilians. According to Him, Other Factors Such as the High Dollar and Climatic Changes Also Influence.
In a statement that has raised debates this Monday (27), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that the rise in food prices in Brazil is related to the increased buying capacity of the population.
According to him, this scenario has encouraged merchants to adjust their prices. The statement was made in a video recorded in the garden of the official residence at Granja do Torto, in Brasília, where the president also addressed other economic and climatic issues that impact the cost of food.
The Context of the Statement
In the video released on social media, Lula appears in a casual conversation while walking through the garden at Granja do Torto, surrounded by tomato plants, leeks, and other vegetables.

An agreement between the EU and Mercosur could lead Brazilian companies to produce in Paraguay to pay less taxes and export more to Europe.
The president highlighted the government’s efforts to deal with the rising food costs and pointed out the reasons that, in his view, have pressured prices.
According to Lula, the higher demand for food, driven by the increase in the buying power of Brazilians, led many sellers to adjust their prices.
He explained: “When there is an increase in demand, that is, when people can buy more, in fact, sellers raise prices. This creates the risk of inflation, and we do not want that to happen.”
External Factors Are Also Noted
The president also stressed that, in addition to the increased demand, other factors such as the high dollar, climatic changes, and problems in agribusiness have contributed to the current scenario.
“The rise of the dollar increases the price of meat, soy, and corn, products that we export in large volumes. We also face climatic difficulties, such as excessive rain, extreme heat, and even drought in some regions, which directly affect agricultural production,” he explained.
These conditions, according to Lula, cause fluctuations in the supply and quality of products, making it difficult to stabilize prices in the internal market.
Strategies to Face the Problem
The government, according to Lula, is promoting a series of meetings with wholesalers, supermarket owners, and producers to try to contain food inflation. He emphasized the importance of dialogue to find practical and sustainable solutions.
“We are working hard and will continue discussing with all involved in the production chain until we find a solution that ensures food is cheaper for the final consumer,” he stated.
Additionally, Lula highlighted that local gardens, like the one he visited at Granja do Torto, can serve as inspiration for small farmers and community projects, helping to increase production and reduce transportation and distribution costs of food.
Impacts on the Population
The president acknowledged that the rise in food prices directly affects Brazilian workers, especially those with lower incomes.
He emphasized that the government is committed to preventing inflation from becoming a chronic problem in the country.
“Those who suffer from inflation are you, the worker, who goes to the supermarket and realizes that your salary no longer covers what you used to buy before,” he declared.
Garden of Granja do Torto: A Symbol of Productivity
During the recording, Lula expressed concern about improving the productivity of the garden located at the official residence.
He stated that the intention is to make it an example of efficiency to meet the needs of Granja do Torto and the Palácio da Alvorada.
“We want this garden to produce more and with better quality, so that we can, in addition to consuming here, offer it to the employees who work with us,” said the president.
The president highlighted that initiatives like this are important for promoting food security and inspiring practical changes that can be replicated in other regions of the country.
The Fight Against Food Inflation Continues
Lula concluded his speech reaffirming the government’s commitment to facing the country’s economic challenges, especially regarding access to food.
He promised that meetings with different stakeholders in the sector will continue until concrete measures are implemented to alleviate the burden of high prices on consumers.
In light of this statement, the population is left with a question: to what extent can the increase in buying power justify the rise in food prices, and how will the government balance this scale?
