Since the Government House was established on the Yanomami Indigenous Land (TIY) in March 2024, the fight against illegal mining has gained unprecedented strength. With over 3,035 operations conducted by November, the actions have disrupted a criminal network that exploits resources like tin, mercury, and of course, gold. Just this year, 33.5 kilograms of the mineral were confiscated, including a load of 21 kilograms valued at R$ 10 million, seized by the Federal Highway Police in November.
The Government House leads a strategy that mobilizes various federal agencies to protect the largest indigenous land in Brazil, covering 9.5 million hectares. The results of the operations so far are impressive: 397 criminal camps destroyed, 996 engines, and 108 thousand liters of diesel rendered unusable. Additionally, 22 aircraft, 86 vessels, and 118 tons of tin, along with more than 30 kilograms of gold, have been removed from circulation.
More than just numbers, these actions represent a structural blow to illegal mining and its devastating impacts on the environment and the Yanomami, Ye’kwana, and Sanöma communities.
Decline of New Mines and Gold Seizures

One of the most significant achievements has been the historic reduction in the opening of new mines. From March to November 2024, new areas decreased by 96.3%, from 1,002 hectares in 2022 to just 37 hectares this year. Between September and November, there was not a single record of new invasions in the TIY.

How much does it cost to live with dignity in Brazil? A study found that in all 79 regions analyzed, the necessary salary was above the minimum of R$ 1,621. In São Paulo, a family of four needs R$ 6,155 per month.
On the seizure front, the highlight was the capture of 21 kilograms of gold hidden in a car heading from Manaus to Venezuela. This million-dollar load is part of a total of 33.5 kilograms confiscated in 2024, indicating a robust disruption of illegal smuggling routes.
Financial Impact and Environmental Protection
The financial losses imposed on the infrastructure of illegal mining have already exceeded R$ 245 million. But the benefits go beyond that: in addition to weakening criminal networks, the operations are helping to preserve one of the world’s most biodiverse territories and ensuring the safety of the indigenous communities that directly depend on this ecosystem.
With over 3,000 operations carried out in less than a year, the fight against illegal mining is a milestone in the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the Yanomami territory and national sovereignty. And gold, a symbol of wealth and greed, has also become one of the main targets in the quest for environmental and social justice.
