New Rule Eliminates Bureaucracy, Dispenses In-Person Exams, and Generates Millionaire Savings for Drivers with Good Traffic Record
The federal government announced that more than 323,000 Brazilian drivers have already had their National Driver’s License (CNH) automatically renewed, without the need to go to the Detran, take in-person exams, or pay fees. The measure started operating last Friday, the 9th, and is part of the so-called Good Driver Provisional Measure, created to reward those who maintain a clean traffic record.
Since it came into effect, the initiative has started benefiting drivers who are registered in the National Positive Driver Registry (RNPC) and who have not committed any infractions in the last 12 months. As a result, the CNH renewal process takes place entirely digitally, without bureaucracy and without additional costs to the driver.
This information was disclosed by the federal government, based on data consolidated by traffic agencies, and reinforces a significant change in the public service policy focused on mobility and road safety in the country.

Who is Entitled to Automatic CNH Renewal and What Are the Rules
To be eligible for automatic CNH renewal, the driver must meet well-defined criteria. The main one is not having committed any traffic violations in the last 12 months, in addition to being properly registered in the National Positive Driver Registry.
Additionally, the CNH must be within its validity period or expired for no more than 30 days. Drivers with a license expired for a longer time do not automatically enter the program and must follow the traditional renewal procedure at the Detran.
Another important point is the age range. Drivers who are over 70 years old do not have access to automatic renewal, regardless of their violation history. For drivers aged 50 or older, the benefit can be used only once, which limits the recurring application of the measure for this group.
Also excluded from the program are drivers who have a reduced validity period due to medical recommendations, especially in cases of progressive diseases or health conditions that require periodic monitoring.
Billion-Dollar Savings and Direct Impact on Brazilians’ Wallets
In addition to simplifying the process, the government highlighted the economic impact of the measure. According to official data, Brazilians have already saved about 226 million reais by dispensing with the renewal fees since the system began operating.
This savings is primarily due to the elimination of costs with medical exams, administrative fees, and trips to the State Departments of Transit. For many drivers, especially in large urban centers, the time saved also represents a significant indirect gain.
The impact has been more pronounced in the Southeast Region, which accounted for the highest number of automatic renewals to date. São Paulo leads the national ranking, with 86,770 CNHs renewed automatically, reflecting both the size of the fleet and the uptake of the good driver registry.
Measure Seeks to Reward Good Behavior on the Road
According to the government, the Good Driver Provisional Measure aims to encourage more responsible behavior on the road, creating a direct incentive for those who respect the rules and contribute to reducing accidents.
By associating administrative benefits with driving history, the public policy begins to value not only enforcement but also prevention. The expectation is that, over time, more drivers will seek to maintain a record free of infractions to access conveniences such as the automatic CNH renewal.
This information was disclosed by the government, which states that the measure may still be expanded or adjusted based on drivers’ adherence and the evaluation of results over the coming months.
What do you think of the new measure that allows automatic CNH renewal for ‘good drivers’ in Brazil?
