Meta, Mark Zuckerberg’s Giant, Prepares Largest Investment in Infrastructure with Submarine Cable That Promises to Connect Continents.
Meta, Mark Zuckerberg’s company and owner of social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is aiming high in the expansion of its global infrastructure. The company announced plans to build a submarine cable with a US$ 10 billion investment, creating an exclusive network that will span all continents.
A Submarine Cable to Connect the World
With data consumption continuously growing, driven by technologies such as MetaAI, Meta accounts for 10% of global fixed internet traffic and 22% of mobile network usage worldwide. The solution to support this demand? A submarine cable that spans 40,000 kilometers, promising to connect the largest regions of the planet, crossing oceans and creating a “W” on the global map.

According to information gathered by TechCrunch, the planned route starts from the east coast of the USA, passes through India and South Africa, and returns via the west coast of America through Australia. The project is an ambitious bet, but it is still in the early stages. No assets have been acquired, and expectations are that Meta will disclose more details in early 2025.

Exclusivity and Logistical Challenge
Unlike its stakes in 16 other submarine networks, including 2Africa, this project will be entirely Meta’s, marking a milestone in Mark Zuckerberg’s infrastructure efforts. This also puts the company on par with Google, which has 33 of its own submarine cable routes.
Despite the ambition, the project faces logistical and market challenges. There is a shortage of specialized ships to install submarine cables, and companies like SubCom are already committed to other tech giants. “There is a significant shortage of ships for cable installation,” explained Ranulf Scarborough, an industry analyst.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta at the Center of Digital Transformation
Led by Santosh Janardhan, Global Head of Infrastructure, Meta aims to transform how tech giants control their networks, moving away from the traditional model dominated by telecommunications. This shift reinforces the dominance of big tech in the digital infrastructure world, especially in Mark Zuckerberg’s case, who seeks to ensure Meta’s efficiency in data transport for billions of users.
The submarine cable is another step to solidify Meta’s power, whose market value on Nasdaq reaches US$ 1.46 trillion, with a 66% increase in stock prices this year. Building this network not only expands the company’s influence but also reaffirms its position as one of the largest tech forces in the world. If realized, the project could redefine the boundaries of global connectivity.
