Technique with pigmented AC2 or AC3 mortar creates a minimum layer of 5 millimeters over exposed bricks, with a yield of 3 to 4 square meters per 20 kg bag, to reduce the exposure of the external wall to rain, sun, and humidity.

Technique with pigmented mortar promises to reduce humidity at the baseboard in external walls of exposed bricks, using a minimum layer of 5 millimeters and an estimated yield between 3 and 4 square meters per 20 kg bag.

The guidance published by the channel Mestre do Acabamento shows an alternative for those who maintain an exposed brick wall in an external area and want to avoid sun and rain. The proposal combines protection and decorative finish.

Humidity at the baseboard requires a barrier over the brick

The problem arises when the wall is left unprotected and frequently receives water. In external areas, the exposed brick can absorb humidity and bring this condition inside the house, especially in the lower parts.

The technique uses AC2 or AC3 mortar, recommended for their greater adhesion and flexibility. The choice is associated with external use, where the coating needs to adhere well to the brick.

The application replaces the appearance of the unplastered wall with a textured layer. The finish resembles rolled roughcast but already receives color during the preparation of the mix, eliminating the need for immediate painting in the shown result.

The mortar should be prepared according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. In the example, the mix starts with about 3.5 liters of water, which can go up to 4 liters if necessary.

After the initial mix, the dye is added. For each 20 kg bag of mortar, a 250-gram package of brown dye was used. The color can change according to the desired effect.

The mix needs to rest for 10 to 15 minutes before application. This interval respects the maturation time indicated for the material to reach the appropriate point.

Surface preparation improves adhesion

The wall also needs preparation. On a humid or very hot day, the recommendation is to wet the brick before applying the mortar, always in parts, to maintain control during the service.

This care prevents the hot wall from quickly absorbing the water from the mixture. The measure helps improve adhesion and reduces the risk of cracks and fissures in the preparation applied over the bricks.

The method begins with a first layer made with a steel trowel. This step fills spaces, covers flaws, and creates a continuous base so the protection is not interrupted.

The recommended thickness is at least 5 millimeters. This is important because a very thin layer can leave exposed points on the brick, compromising the goal of protection against moisture.

After the first application, the process continues with a second layer using a roller specifically for texture. It is not necessary to wait for the first coat to dry, as adhesion tends to be better with a damp base.

The roller spreads the mortar and creates the visual effect. The result looks similar to decorative texture but maintains the functional purpose of covering the brick and reducing its exposure to external weather.

Yield depends on care in application

The presented yield varies from 3 to 4 square meters per 20 kg bag. The difference depends on the applied thickness, the condition of the wall, and the care taken to fill gaps without wasting material.

Using the roller can save time, but requires attention. When the application is done only with it, without the first coat with a trowel, there may be holes or less covered areas.

Therefore, the guidance is to go over these points more times until the layer is thick enough. The goal is not to leave any brick exposed where moisture protection is necessary.

The brown finish seen in the application tends to lighten after drying. To keep the color darker, the video mentions the possibility of using two packets of dye.

Protection can receive resin after drying

The pigmented mortar creates a cover over the brick, but protection against rain can be reinforced with resin. The video mentions the subsequent use of Smart Resin to protect the wall, plaster, or brick.

This step appears as a complement, not as a mandatory part of the initial application. The function is to increase protection when the wall will remain exposed to rainwater after the texture has completely dried.

Savings depend on reusing the prepared material. In the example, the leftover is used on another part of the wall to avoid disposal, as the ready mix should not be thrown away.

For those facing moisture at the baseboard, the technique combines simple preparation, continuous layer, and decorative finish. The result depends on the correct choice of mortar, minimum thickness, and careful application.

The guidance does not eliminate the assessment of existing infiltrations or structural problems. The proposal is to protect the exposed brick, especially on walls subject to sun, rain, and humidity.

With pigmented mortar, the wall stops being raw without losing the rustic look, covering the surface and transforming protection into a finish.

What do you think of this technique against moisture on the baseboard in external walls of exposed bricks?
