Inaugurated last Saturday, the first stage of the Mato Grosso State Railway connects Rondonópolis to Dom Aquino and integrates the North Network. Part of the New PAC, the largest railway project under construction in the country will have 743 km in the complete route and will cross 16 municipalities towards Santos.
Mato Grosso inaugurated the first 162 km stretch of the largest railway project under construction in Brazil, with about R$ 5 billion invested by Rumo to transport 10 million tons of grains per year to the Port of Santos. The delivery marks the beginning of a project that should strengthen the agribusiness export corridor.
According to information released by the portal NSC Total, the first stage of the Mato Grosso State Railway was inaugurated last Saturday. Considered the largest railway project under construction in the country, the line is planned for a 743-kilometer extension, and the delivered branch has 162 kilometers, between Rondonópolis and a new railway terminal on BR-070, in Dom Aquino, where there is an estimated movement of 10 million tons of grains per year. The investment of about R$ 5 billion was from Rumo, the company that will operate the line, within the New PAC, with financing from Sudeco and BNDES debentures. The new railway is an extension of the North Network and connects to the national network towards the Port of Santos.
The first stretch of the largest railway project in the country

The first stage of the Mato Grosso State Railway was inaugurated last Saturday and is already considered the largest railway project under construction in the country. The delivered branch has 162 kilometers, between Rondonópolis and a new railway terminal on BR-070, in Dom Aquino.

Without money to pay rent and without an architect’s degree, a man took a chisel, chainsaw, and hammer, carved a house into the hillside, and built a fairy-tale dwelling that looks like it’s straight out of The Lord of the Rings in just four months for less than R$ 25,000.

A 33-year-old from Paraná received a quote of R$ 12,000 just for the structural base of the house, opened tutorials on YouTube, and transformed a family plot into a 200 m² two-story house for about half the price charged by professionals.

Largest bridge in São Paulo reaches 75% completion and is expected to strengthen strategic connection in the interior of São Paulo.
In this initial stretch, there is an estimated movement of 10 million tons of grains per year. The project was built through a railway authorization granted to the government of Mato Grosso, the first piece of a project that should transform the production flow in the region.
R$ 5 billion from Rumo and the New PAC

Behind the largest railway project in the country is a robust investment. The approximately R$ 5 billion invested came from Rumo, the company that will operate the line, and the project is part of the Novo PAC, the federal government’s investment program.
The financing was structured through the Superintendence of Development of the Midwest (Sudeco) and BNDES debentures, combining public and private resources. This arrangement is what made a project of this scale feasible, in a railway authorization model that is gaining strength in the country.
743 km, 16 municipalities and the connection with Santos
The 162 kilometers delivered are just the beginning of the largest railway project. The new railway is an extension of the Malha Norte and, in the complete route, will reach 743 kilometers, connecting Rondonópolis to Lucas do Rio Verde, with a branch to Cuiabá.
Along the way, the line will cross 16 municipalities and connect to the national railway network, allowing, mainly, the transport of grains to the Port of Santos. The idea is to strengthen the export corridor, reducing dependence on highways for crop outflow.
Santa Catarina studies two new railways
While the largest railway project advances in Mato Grosso, Santa Catarina is studying two new state railways, also greenfield, that is, lines installed in places without existing railway infrastructure. The projects connect Chapecó to Correia Pinto, with 319 kilometers, and Araquari to Navegantes, with 62 kilometers.
The first section would connect the West region to the Tronco Sul, part of the Malha Sul, and the second would connect the port complexes of São Francisco do Sul and Itajaí and Navegantes. The forecast is to complete the two projects in the second semester, if there is no new extension, since the work began in 2022, and the State intends to grant the sections to the private sector, with a presentation already made to international investors, although without a defined concession model yet.
With the inauguration of the first 162 kilometers, Mato Grosso put into operation a section of what is considered the largest railway project under execution in Brazil, a project planned for 743 kilometers that received approximately R$ 5 billion from Rumo, within the Novo PAC, and financing from Sudeco and BNDES.
The line, an extension of the North Network, will cross 16 municipalities and connect to the national network to transport 10 million tons of grains per year to the Port of Santos, strengthening the export corridor. Meanwhile, Santa Catarina is studying two greenfield railways, still far from being feasible, as a sign that railway expansion is back on the radar of Brazilian states.
