What Is PROFLETRAS and How Does It Work
The Professional Master’s Degree in Language (PROFLETRAS) is a semi-presential program recognized by CAPES/MEC, aimed exclusively at teachers currently working in public schools. Classes can take place from Monday to Saturday, varying according to the chosen institution, and in-person meetings are combined with online academic activities.
The course is coordinated by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and is part of the Basic Education Program (PROEB). Upon completion, graduates receive the title of Master in Language, valid nationwide, which adds weight to their teaching career and opens doors for professional advancement.
Courses Offered and Objectives
The PROFLETRAS is not an isolated course: it is a national network that integrates dozens of public higher education institutions. Its focus is to train Portuguese Language teachers to enhance practices in reading, writing, linguistic analysis, and the formation of literary readers.
The proposal is for teachers to bring scientific knowledge directly into the classroom, creating an immediate impact on the quality of education. The program covers topics such as textual genres, oral communication, written production, language practices, and semiotic analysis, always aligned with the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC).
Spots and Locations Available
The 2025 call for applications presents a robust offer: there are 911 spots distributed among federal and state universities across all regions of the country. The numbers vary by institution — USP, for example, offers 18 spots, while UFRJ provides 20. In the Northeast, UPE opens up to 25 spots in locations like Nazaré da Mata and Garanhuns.
In addition to the wide competition, there is a minimum reserve of 20% of the spots for affirmative actions, aimed at candidates who are black, brown, indigenous, quilombola, disabled, and other groups as defined by state legislation and internal regulations of each institution.
How the Selection Process Will Work
The National Entrance Exam is composed of two stages: a multiple-choice test with 20 questions and a written test, where the candidate must produce an argumentative essay.
To proceed, it is necessary to score at least 60% on the multiple-choice test and then achieve a minimum score of 6.0 on the written test. The final score will be calculated with a greater weight on the essay (60%), emphasizing the importance of writing skills.
In case of a tie, preference is given to candidates aged 60 and above, followed by those who score higher on the written exam.
Requirements to Apply
Only teachers from the public network who are currently teaching Portuguese Language in elementary or high school may participate. It is mandatory to have a diploma in Licentiate in Language – Portuguese or Licentiate in Pedagogy, registered with MEC.
Additionally, candidates must have a CPF, valid identification document, and meet the technical conditions for semi-presential activities, such as access to the internet and a computer. Those who have previously completed PROFLETRAS cannot apply again.
