MEC Platform Launches Free Language Courses with Simplified Registration, Self-Directed Content, and Digital Certification for Students and Interested Parties Throughout Brazil.
The Ministry of Education (MEC), through the Aprenda Mais platform, is offering free online English and Spanish courses, with registration open to all of Brazil, no selection process required, and guaranteed digital certification for those who complete the modules within the stipulated timeframe.
This initiative is part of MEC’s strategy to democratize access to language education, using the Distance Education (EAD) modality, which allows total flexibility for students and ensures free access to all stages.
The courses have a 30-hour workload, are self-directed, and must be completed by January 31, 2026.

Free Courses Without Selection Process
The MEC language courses are available on the Aprenda Mais platform and can be accessed without prior experience required, no limited number of spots, and no fees.
All materials, activities, and assessments are provided online, with immediate access after registration.
The self-directed modality means that the participant has the autonomy to organize their own study pace, without the need for a tutor or live classes.
Offer Includes English, Spanish, and Other Languages
The “Languages, Linguistics, and Literature” category of the platform gathers all available courses.
Besides English and Spanish, there are also options in French and Portuguese as an Additional Language, aimed especially at foreigners living in Brazil.
All courses have been developed by federal educational institutions, such as the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS), ensuring qualified academic content adapted for the online format.
Content of Spanish Courses
Among the available Spanish courses are:
- Spanish 1: greetings, personal pronouns, the verb “ser/estar”, alphabet, and numbers.
- Spanish 2: personal introductions, transportation, numbers, and regular verbs.
- Spanish 3 to Spanish 10: routines, food, body parts, verb tenses, vocabulary for everyday situations.
- Spanish for Events: basic communication for professional and academic situations.
Each course includes three modules and a 30-hour workload, allowing for progressive learning for beginners.
Content of English Courses
The English courses follow a similar format, ranging from basic to applied content.
Among them:
- English 1: personal identification and vocabulary for location in time and space.
- English 2: transportation, family, routine, and habits.
- English 3: food, clothing, and simple descriptions.
- English 4 to 13: use of modal verbs, verb tenses, constructions for everyday dialogues, and technical vocabulary.
- Applied English for Events: language for academic and professional contexts.
Just like in Spanish, each course has a 30-hour workload and content divided into modules for easier tracking.
Target Audience and Participation Requirements
The courses are aimed at high school students, higher education students, and the general public interested in learning languages for free.
There are no requirements for affiliation with educational institutions or prior knowledge in the chosen language.
To participate, you only need to:
- Understand texts in Portuguese.
- Have access to the internet and a device with audio and video capabilities.
Recognized Digital Certification
All participants who complete the courses by the final deadline will receive a digital certificate issued by the MEC.
This document can be used for:
- Complementary hours in undergraduate courses.
- Proof of basic knowledge in languages for academic or professional purposes.
Although they do not have validity as undergraduate courses, they are considered certified free courses and can enrich the resumes of students and workers.
