Although the Earth spins at extremely high speed, we feel stationary. Understand how gravity and inertia ensure this stability.
Humanity lives on a planet that spins at 1,670 km/h at the Equator and travels around the Sun at 107,000 km/h, but this frantic movement is completely imperceptible to our senses. The sensation of immobility occurs because the human body only reacts to sudden changes in speed, not to continuous and uniform motion.
Since the Earth moves in a constant manner, without accelerations or decelerations, our sensory system does not register any displacement.
Moreover, since the entire atmosphere, oceans, and structures around us follow this same rhythm, we lack external reference points that reveal the real movement of the ground beneath our feet.

The celestial mechanics that influence life on Earth
The phenomena that determine the passage of time and weather conditions originate from astronomical processes that occur continuously, even without being perceived.
One of the main ones is the Earth’s rotation, carried out from west to east in approximately 24 hours, responsible for the succession of dawn, dusk, and night.
Another essential process is the revolution of the planet around the Sun, which takes about 365 days, 5 hours, and 49 minutes to complete.
Since this period does not exactly correspond to the whole number of days adopted by the calendar, periodic adjustments become necessary.

Therefore, an additional day is inserted in February at regular intervals, preventing the calendar from deviating from the astronomical cycle over the decades.
The distribution of solar energy also depends on the tilt of the Earth’s axis, which remains tilted at about 23.5 degrees throughout the orbit.
This configuration alters the angle of incidence of sunlight at different latitudes, modifying the duration of days, the intensity of radiation received, and the behavior of the climate throughout the year.
This mechanism is responsible for the seasonal variations observed between the hemispheres and the diversity of ecosystems existing on the planet.
The role of gravity in daily balance
One of the main reasons we are not affected by the physical effects of rotation is the force of gravity.
Although the planetary spin creates a phenomenon called centrifugal force, which tends to push objects away from the surface, it is negligible compared to gravitational attraction.
- Physical superiority: Data from NASA confirms that the Earth’s gravity is hundreds of times more intense than the thrust force of rotation.
- Guaranteed stability: It is this colossal force that keeps people, vehicles, and buildings firmly anchored to the ground, neutralizing any influence that the spin could cause in our daily lives.
- Closed system: The Earth’s atmosphere is held by gravity, which makes the air move along with us and prevents wind currents that would be caused by astronomical speed.
Why does the body ignore the spin?
To understand why we don’t feel this speed, just observe everyday behaviors in other modes of transport.
Astronomer Stephanie Deppe, from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, points out that a passenger in a car or plane at constant speed feels stationary if they close their eyes and isolate external noises.

This analogy by Galileo also applies to a ship in calm waters: if there is no vibration or change of course, it is impossible to notice that the vessel is sailing just by observing its interior.
In the case of the Earth, as there is no nearby fixed point for comparison — since everything around us shares the same speed — the perception of rest becomes absolute.
