The Recovery of the Construction Sector Also Occurs in Other Parts of the Country, Where Data and Indicators Reveal New Ventures and Job Creation

The state of Pernambuco has shown recovery in the construction sector. Even with the Covid-19 pandemic reporting significant declines in recent months, industry entrepreneurs are more hopeful with the return of their projects’ activities. Not only in the state but also across the country, indicators affirm the industry’s recovery with new ventures and job creation.

According to the new Construction Confidence Index (ICST), drafted by the Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, in July there was an increase of 6.6 in the indicator, marking the third consecutive national rise. The score, which varies on a scale of 0 to 200, reached 83.7 points.

According to André Portela, lawyer and partner at Portela Legal Solutions and specialist in structuring new real estate ventures, launches in the Metropolitan Region of Pernambuco and the Interior will begin in the second half of this year, yielding positive economic results. For André, this boost means job creation and the expansion of the investment portfolio available for those seeking, for example, the dream of owning a home.

For Luiz Taboas Filho, director of Construtora VL, “Despite the quarantine phase slightly hindering this schedule, we managed to maintain sales. With considerable agility, we made the process 100% digital, which brought us more balance. For the upcoming months, with improvements in the economic scenario, we expect a growth surge.”

Expectations Improve

In light of the positive evolution of construction sector indicators, despite still showing declines in production and employment, business confidence and expectations have also improved.

  • The Construction Entrepreneur Confidence Index (ICEI-Construction) increased by 3.7 points, recording 46.3 points in July. It is the third consecutive rise in the index, following significant drops in March and April.
  • The indicators for expectations of purchasing inputs and raw materials and the number of employees registered 49.5 and 49.4 points, with increases of 5.3 and 5.7 points, respectively.
  • The activity expectation indicator registered 50.1 points, up 4.4 points in July. Thus, the expectation for the coming months shifted from negative to neutral.
  • The expectation index regarding new ventures and services recorded 48 points, meaning entrepreneurs still anticipate a decline in the number of new ventures and services in the next six months.

Jobs

Last week, according to data from the Ministry of Economy, it was shown that in June, the construction sector was the 2nd largest generator of jobs. The construction sector ranked second among the five groups of economic activities analyzed by the registry, with 17,270 jobs, only behind agribusiness.
