Instagram Instants arrives as an integrated feature and also as a standalone app. The tool allows sending photos without filters, text, or stickers to close friends, with single viewing for 24 hours. Meta’s bet is to respond to the growing desire for spontaneity among the network’s younger users.

Instagram launched on Wednesday (May 13) Instants, a new feature that directly changes what made the social network famous: the way of sharing photos. The tool works both within the main app and as a standalone app, allowing users to send unfiltered images to a select group of friends with the clear rule of single viewing.

Instants works similarly to Snapchat, a competitor that has historically attracted a young audience with the proposal of ephemeral messages. When another Instagram user opens a photo sent by Instants, the image cannot be viewed again, and the content disappears from the gallery after 24 hours. The information was confirmed by Instagram’s Vice President of Products, Tessa Lyons-Laing, in an interview with USA TODAY.

What is Instagram Instants and how it works

Instants is Meta’s latest bet to reposition Instagram as a platform for spontaneous sharing among friends. The feature delivers exactly the opposite of the carefully produced aesthetic that dominated the social network over the last decade.

Instead of filters, texts, and stickers that characterize other features of the social network, Instants is limited to the raw photo, captured and sent on the spot. The image goes directly to a small audience: close friends, in a private group selected by the user, or mutual friends, meaning mutual followers on Instagram.

To send a photo via Instants, the path within Instagram is as follows:

  1. Open the Instagram app on the phone
  2. Access Direct Messenger (message icon at the bottom of the screen)
  3. Tap on the small stack of photos in the lower right corner
  4. Choose the audience between “Friends” or “Close Friends”
  5. Take the photo
  6. Confirm sending to the Instants gallery

To undo a send, the user can tap the “Undo” button that appears right after the photo is taken. It is also possible to remove already sent images by pressing and holding the photo on the collage icon in the upper left corner of the feature’s gallery.

Unique Viewing and No Second Intentions

The unique viewing rule is the point that most differentiates Instants from the Stories feature, already established on Instagram. Stories allow photos and videos to be available for 24 hours and can be reviewed as many times as followers want.

Instants doesn’t work like that. When a user opens a photo sent via Instants, the image disappears immediately after closing, with no possibility of a second viewing. This is the same model used by Snapchat for over a decade, and it’s precisely what attracted Generation Z to the rival platform.

The proposal, according to Meta, is to eliminate the pressure of producing perfect content for social media. Without the possibility of being reviewed, Instagram users become less concerned with filters and edits and more focused on what they really want to share with their close circle of friends.

How Instants Connects with Stories

Instants was designed for a smaller group of followers, but Meta has built a bridge with Instagram Stories. A collection of photos sent via Instants can be grouped within the feature itself and shared in traditional Stories.

For the audience viewing these Stories, the recognition is visual. Posts originating from Instants appear with a film roll aspect, precisely to differentiate from the standard Stories content posted directly on Instagram. This visual mark helps users understand what came from the new feature and what was posted conventionally.

The integration between the two features expands the reach of Instants without destroying the original proposal. Those who want to keep sharing restricted to close friends can do so. Those who want to extend part of the content to all followers also have this option within Instagram.

Why Meta Bet on This Feature for Generation Z

Meta’s move with Instants is not random. The company has observed a growing trend of younger users towards sharing real moments of everyday life, without the highly produced aesthetic that dominated social media for years.

Meta’s internal numbers confirm this trend. According to Instagram’s vice president of products, Generation Z users are 2.5 times more likely to share a photo or video in Stories restricted to Close Friends than older users of the social network.

The same young users are also five times more likely to use the Notes feature, launched by Instagram in 2022, which allows sharing small texts or temporary music within the app. These two data points explain why Meta sees a clear opportunity in betting on ephemeral and more intimate features.

The Explicit Inspiration from Snapchat

The similarity between Instagram Instants and Snapchat is acknowledged by Meta itself. For years, Snapchat was the refuge of Generation Z precisely because it offered a casual sharing model without permanent records.

Meta had already tried to copy elements of Snapchat at other times in Instagram’s history. Stories, launched in 2016, are the most striking example of this strategy. The copied feature worked so well that it ended up surpassing the original in global reach, and today Stories are a central part of any Instagram user’s experience.

Instants follows the same logic of direct inspiration. The difference is that now Meta has also launched a standalone app with the same name, connected to the Instagram account. According to the company, the separate app serves to better understand how users interact with the new feature without affecting those who prefer to stay only within the main app.

When Instagram Instants will be available to everyone

Instagram Instants was released to all users of the social network worldwide this Wednesday, May 13. There is no gradual release by country or region, according to information released by Meta.

To use the feature, just update the Instagram app to the latest version available in the mobile app store. It is not mandatory to download the standalone Instants app, as all functionality is integrated into the main Instagram. The separate app is just an alternative for those who want a more focused experience on the feature.

Meta’s expectation is that Instants will deliver two results at the same time: keeping Generation Z within Instagram, avoiding the shift to competitors like Snapchat and TikTok, and generating data on how this audience wants to communicate in the coming years. The first days of use should indicate whether the bet will work or if it will be just another secondary feature in the app’s portfolio.

What this launch reveals about the future of social networks

Instagram Instants is more than just a timely novelty. The feature points to a larger shift in the logic of social networks, which seem to be moving from massive sharing to small, user-curated groups.

For years, the goal of platforms was to maximize reach and public engagement. Likes, views, and followers were the metrics of individual success within Instagram. The movement led by Generation Z, however, suggests a fatigue with this logic and a preference for smaller, more intimate interactions without permanent records.

Meta has noticed the trend and is acting to reposition itself. If Instants consolidates as a frequently used feature, it is possible that other social network features will follow the same path in the coming years. The eternal feed model may be facing its biggest test in a decade.

The launch of Instants confirms that Meta is willing to tweak Instagram’s DNA to keep up with what the next generation wants from social networks. The imitation of Snapchat within the app can be seen both as a lack of originality and as a smart strategic move, depending on the point of view.

And you, what do you think about this new feature? Do you intend to use Instants to send spontaneous photos to close friends? Do you believe Meta was right to copy Snapchat again, or will the feature become another forgotten launch? Leave your comment, share your opinion, and tag someone who will love this new feature.
