The Line 22 Brown Project, a new subway line that will connect São Paulo to Cotia, is underway. Understand the current stage of this important urban mobility project in the metropolitan area of São Paulo.
The expansion of the subway network in São Paulo has as its next major step the implementation of Line 22 Brown. This project aims to connect the capital of São Paulo to the municipality of Cotia, covering a route of 29 km with 19 planned stations.
In May 2023, the São Paulo Metro hired the Sista Prime consortium to develop the engineering anteproject, architecture and geology of Line 22. The consortium, formed by the companies Sista (or Sistra) and Prime, has a deadline of 35 months to complete this work, extending until May 2026.
Next Steps
After the completion of the engineering anteproject, the São Paulo Metro will hire the basic project of the line. This phase is expected to begin in mid-2026 and, considering an average of two years for its completion, it is estimated that the essential studies for Line 22 will be finalized between 2028 and 2029. This indicates that the start of the actual project works may only occur at the end of the decade or at the beginning of the 2030s.

Future Projections
Based on the current progress and the planned steps, it is possible to foresee that Line 22 Brown may only be operational in mid-2040, if all processes occur as planned. This metro axis, starting at Sumaré station and passing through areas such as USP, neighborhoods in Osasco, and following the Raposo Tavares axis to Cotia, is a significant addition to the transport infrastructure of the region.
Line 22 is crucial for improving urban mobility between São Paulo and Cotia, an area with intense passenger flow. By providing a fast and efficient transportation alternative, the line will alleviate traffic on the roads and contribute to reducing pollution.
Official Perspective
The São Paulo Metro has not yet established an official deadline for the completion of Line 22. Currently, the institution is focused on developing the engineering anteproject and geology, a crucial stage for the advancement of the project.
Despite the long period projected until the complete operation of Line 22, it is important to recognize the advances in the expansion of São Paulo’s subway network. This line represents an important milestone in the development of urban mobility in the region, promising significant improvements in public transportation and the quality of life for citizens.
