Investment of R$ 1.1 Billion Provides for 12 Km Water Pipelines, Reservoirs, Expansion of the Rio Manso Water Treatment Plant, and Ultrafiltration in the Rio das Velhas System
The Government of Minas Gerais and Copasa announced, on this Monday (22/9), a package of works to strengthen the water security of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (RMBH).
The investment totals R$ 1.1 billion and aims to ensure continuous, quality supply prepared to meet the population even in situations of greater environmental pressure or urban growth.
According to the company, the benefits range from greater water availability to the increased use of advanced treatment technologies, enhancing the resilience of the region’s production systems.

Commitment to Efficiency and Economic Development
During the event, Copasa’s president, Fernando Passalio, highlighted that investments have been increased since 2019. He stated that the major challenge is to accelerate the execution of the works to make the company even more efficient and competitive.
“Copasa has made substantial investments and has been breaking records since 2019. The major challenge is to ensure that these investments gain more speed, making Copasa more efficient and competitive,” said Passalio.
Expansion of the System with New Lots
The works are divided into three lots. The first is already underway and involves the installation of over 12 kilometers of treated water pipeline, with diameters of 1,800 and 1,600 millimeters.
The new structure will pass through the municipalities of Sarzedo, Mário Campos, and Betim.
Lot one also provides for the construction of a reservoir with a capacity of 10,000 liters. This phase has investments of R$ 400 million and is expected to be completed in two stages: one of the sections by August 2026 and the remainder in April 2027.
Modernization of the Rio Manso Water Treatment Plant
Another highlight is the expansion and modernization of the Rio Manso Water Treatment Plant (ETA). The flow capacity will reach 10.3 cubic meters per second, with investments of R$ 200 million.
The project includes four new coagulation modules, four new clarifiers, and the expansion of the aluminum sulfate, chlorine, and lime systems. There will also be electrical and automation adjustments, along with a new Waste Treatment Unit.
To complete this phase, an additional 6,000 meters of pipeline will be installed, supplying a reservoir in Contagem. The cost for this phase is R$ 327 million.
These two lots are in the bidding phase by the State Secretariat for Infrastructure (Seinfra), funded by the Repair Measures Agreement related to the damage caused by the collapse of Vale S.A.’s dams in Brumadinho.
Ultrafiltration Technology in the Rio das Velhas System
The package concludes with the implementation of a Ultrafiltration system at the Bela Fama Water Treatment Plant, which is part of the Rio das Velhas System. This technology acts as an additional barrier in the treatment of water, enhancing water security.
The project totals R$ 230 million in investments and completes the strategy for modernization and resilience for the supply of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte.
With these works, Copasa and the Government of Minas reaffirm their commitment to preparing the water infrastructure for the present and future of the RMBH population, combining technology, efficiency, and security in one of the largest investment packages ever announced in the sector.
