Apple Prepares Design Change for iPhone 17 Pro with Hybrid Aluminum and Glass Back and New Area Dedicated to Wireless Charging
A Bloomberg report pointed out important changes for the iPhone 17 Pro. The report stated that the models will have “a new cutout area in the lower two-thirds of the phone that also functions as a wireless charging area.” This adjustment marks a difference in design as it expands the area dedicated to MagSafe and the Qi standard.
In addition, The Information had already anticipated last year that the back of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max would be made partially of aluminum and partially of glass.
However, the news did not detail how this division would look, leading to various conceptual images created by blogs and designers.

Renderings and Indications
The first renderings released by MacRumors showed a rounded rectangular area on the back of the device.
According to Gurman, this would indeed be the design chosen by Apple. The main reason is simple: with an all-aluminum back, it would not be possible to maintain wireless charging efficiently.
Therefore, the glass area would become essential to enable compatibility with MagSafe and other wireless charging systems. The question now is whether the company will adopt a uniform color or opt for a two-tone appearance around the glass area.
Structure and Materials
Another point highlighted in the report is the choice of aluminum for the structure. There is still no clarity on this change, but Gurman points out two possible reasons: to reduce weight and improve heat dissipation.
This is a significant change because the models between the iPhone X and iPhone 14 Pro used stainless steel, while the 15 Pro and 16 Pro generations received titanium. Now, Apple seems to be returning to aluminum in the Pro models, signaling a new strategy to balance design, weight, and thermal performance.
