The Provided Technology Will Use Membranes to Reduce Sulfate Levels of Seawater to Required Levels in FPSO in the Santos Basin
Modec closed a multimillion-dollar contract for Equinor’s FPSO, which is being built to operate in the Bacalhau Field, located in the Santos Basin. The contracted company is Water Technologies & Solutions from Suez, which will provide technologies to reduce the sulfate volume in seawater to the necessary level.
The contract for the construction of the FPSO with Equinor, operator of the Bacalhau Field in the Santos Basin, includes the supply of equipment, engineering, project management, procurement, and construction supervision. The FPSO’s production capacity is 220,000 barrels per day and natural gas of 15 million cubic meters per day.
Technology Supply for the FPSO
For oil production and extraction, treated seawater must be injected into the reservoir, which are referred to as SRUs in the industry. Sulfate removal devices for seawater that use ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes are an important part of the process and are essential for the protection and operation of assets in FPSO.

Suez produces and supplies ultrafiltration membranes and nanofiltration membranes. The offshore oil and gas industry relies on them to remove sulfate and other divalent hardness ions from the injected water to improve oil recovery. The removal of these ions reduces the tendency for barium sulfate and strontium sulfate to accumulate in reservoirs and flow channels and will also prevent good acidification by controlling sulfate-reducing bacteria.
Partnership Between Suez and Modec
Kevin Cassidy, executive vice president of engineering systems at SUEZ, states that the partnership between Suez and Modec for the construction of the FPSO is a great vote of confidence. He also mentioned that Suez is proud to be selected by Modec as a supplier for these essential projects in oil extraction.
